“Not sure why this is rated second best near Etosha!”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 26, 2013

I guess we were expecting a lot since this is rated second best near Etosha. However, the management's lack of attention to details makes us not want to go back.

The rooms and construction of the lodge were quite nice - kind of a colonial style of architecture - not quite what you expect near the bush but nice nevertheless. The outdoor shower in the bedrooms, however, were completely impractical as they looked out onto other chalets. There was a space for a privacy curtain but no curtain. Also, the windows in the bathrooms were frosted half way, which meant that if you were taller than 5'2" then forget about any sort of privacy during an evening shower. The windows overlooked the walkway to all the rooms and were completely see-through to all guests.

The rooms and bathrooms were very clean, however they lacked in basic amenities. There were 6 bottles of lotion but no shampoo and conditioner and 1 bar of soap to share between 2 sinks, 2 showers and a bathtub which meant we had to keep moving the soap around as we needed it. We did receive another bar of soap upon request but is this really something we should ask for when we are staying at a supposedly "luxury" lodge? The pillows were also not comfortable - and there were only 4 pillows for 4 people. The lodge only put 1 extra bed in the room even though we were a family of 4 - they just put 3 pillows on the king bed. There was plenty of room for a 4th bed but I guess they thought it was not necessary.

The quality of the food was very mediocre. We informed the chef that we were vegetarian and they still made NO effort to cater for us. For our main course for dinner both nights we only got the sides. This was disappointing.
Breakfast was also a disappointment with almost no variety and both days the papaya on the spread was still raw.

The only reason I am giving this place 3 stars is because of the friendliness of SOME of the wait staff. We have stayed at Kempinski's Mokuti Lodge, Mushara Bush Camp and Eagle Tented Lodge before and never have we been so disappointed.

Be aware that this lodge is also 40 km from Etosha (we were aware of this so this did not affect my review).

We booked a last minute stay at Epacha and drove up from Windhoek for the weekend. What a find! We are expats living in Windhoek and we've stayed inside the park before at Okaukuejo. There is no comparison. Epacha is peaceful, spacious, and comfortable. It's also only a 30 minute drive to Etosha so we were able to enjoy Etosha at its best as well.

I loved the design and decor. They lodge is replete with beautiful antiques, yet everything still has a real safari feel to it. Our chalet was huge and well appointed. They pay attention to the small details that make one's stay enjoyable (i.e. bath robes, eco friendly amenities, hair dryer, etc.). The bed was very comfortable and we slept deeply. The bathroom has two showers (one inside and one outside) and a bathtub, all offering lovely views of the valley. Each chalet has a balcony at the front that overlooks the valley and it is lovely to sit outside under the incredible sky at night and to watch the sunrise in the morning.

Service was some of the best we've experienced in our travels around Namibia (I travel in Namibia a lot). Staff go out of their way to help and they tend to anticipate one's needs. Just a few examples - we went on a morning game drive in the lodge reserve with Alfred, an outstanding local San guide, and one of the staff washed our truck while we were with Alfred. Alfred (we were impressed with his in-depth knowledge) also went out of his way to make sure we saw lots of game. He extended our drive by almost an hour. After we had packed up and were leaving our chalet to check out, we saw a staff person waiting respectfully at a distance to give us privacy but he was there to carry down our luggage.

The food was also some of the best we've enjoyed in Namibia. We were served up five course meals in the evening and my Belgian husband and his Belgian and New York colleagues were right at home. The staff sang some traditional songs during dinner and on our first night they delivered a delicious birthday cake to my husband that I had ordered beforehand. They serve up a large breakfast with a full cold buffet and an array of hot meals to choose from. Staff remained attentive even when we overstayed their breakfast time frame. They did not remove the food and try to rush us. You can see they are well trained to ensure guests are satisfied.

I can highly recommend this lodge. We felt it was very good value for the cost.

We stayed at Epacha for 1 night and it was a delight. What to say about the Location...just that this one cannot be beaten. The lodge is built on a mountain and while you are driving towards it late afternoon...you just get amazed and excited to start experiencing it. It is a fantastic place! Stunning gardens, great friendly efficient caring staff. Great guide and Manager with incredible knowledge of all the animals, plant and bird life in the area. The rooms are great very comfortable with all the little extra touches. The food is excellent and the chef really outdid himself. The location is spectacular, views are breathtaking. The lodge is beautifully decorated and tastefully furnished. The bar and beautifull swimming pool is a great hang out spot. The barmen were both the most personable and offered good service. The staff are delightful and the management couple, Des and Armin are perfectly lovely. We did a little sundowner game drive and thoroughly enjoyed their company, homemade droewors and all the photo opportunities. A great place and magical place to overnight. I hope to be back soon again

We 've stayed (me, my husband and my 2 kids(9 and 10 years old))at the lodge in april for 3 nights. It was amazing. We had chalet nr.1 and we had a beautiful view on the swimming pool and the park. The chalets are beautiful and very clean. All the staff is very friendly, happy, nothing is to much. Dinner was excellent. The chef asked at the children what they want to eat and then he make that especially for them. We went to Etosha and when we came back our car was very dirty. The next morning the staff had clean our car for us.
Thank you for everything. Everything was perfect!!!!
We've loved every second on the lodge.
Keep up the good work.

we were surprised about the size of our chalet, huge, with a big bathtub, shower and outdoor shower. fridge (no mini-bar), balcony and great big bed (No 2) coffee making facility. no wifi in room though. fancy big lodge with impressive entrance hall.
there were almost no people there when we were there (in August?) the facilities are very good, our dinner was VERY good but I guess the distance to everything else is a bit of a problem.
The manager even lit the fireplace for us 2, nice appreciated gesture.
the Spa and pool area is very nice, we had a couple massage in an open room only with shades, it was simply fantastic. Great place to relax...my husbands' wildlife trip was ok but not great. the animals are here a bit more scared then other places we have experienced and we wonder why.
to mention: from the intersection onto D2695 it is still 27km to the entrance of the lodge and with the road conditions it is half an our to the lodge.

Room Tip: nr 2 was great, lots of birds in the morning

On our roundtrip through Namibia we spent three nights in Epacha Game lodge. We were lucky that our group of 6 persons (40 - 79 years) were the only ones the first two nights. The stuff was extremely friendly and helped us with everything. Food and the selection of wine was outstanding. For the birthday of one groupmember they set up a bushdinner, which made all of us breathless. The setting in the middle of the bush with hundreds of lights, two campfires, exceptionell food and drinks let us feel like being in a movie. But the best was the choir, all stuffmembers did. They were singing and playing the drums.... that i had tears in my eyes. Thank you Armin again!!! The lodge is about one hour carride to Ethosha Nationalpark. The rooms are big, nice furnished and the outdoor-shower is special. The massages some of our group had were very good as well. I highly recommend this lodge and will definitely go back.

Room Tip: Take a room closer to reception if you don´t like to climb "mountains"

Lovely and high quality lodge!
Very friendly, warm and helpful staff. The bungalows are huge and very cosy furnished with a big veranda overloking the game park and the area.
The bathroom is marvellous with indoor and outdoor shower .
The dinner is delicious and the pool area takes your breath when you see it first time .
It takes you about 45minutes to get to the gate of Etosha, but the drive there is nice. I think you also get a higher quality lodge for your money than closer to the park gate.

Hey Katja! Thank you so much for review, so nice to see that our guest are happy! We hope to welcome you again some time at Epacha, you will see that by then we have our new road opened and the drive to Etosha will be a lot shorter, right over our own Epacha Game Reserve.
Kind Regards, Armin
