“A bit tired, but excellent animal sightings around this camp”
Reviewed March 31, 2014

We stayed two nights at the campsite at the beginning of February and like other reviewers, we found the campsite and public areas to be in quite a state of disrepair. It felt very tired, and though there were signs up saying it was all going to be fixed up, we didn't see any evidence of this, and tripped over a few times walking on the wooden walkways. We swam in the pool both days we were there, but I didn't put my head under as it was cloudy and not hugely inviting, but I was desperate to cool down. At least the drinks at the bar were cheap! We ate breakfast in the restaurant both mornings which was delicious, and had dinner one night and enjoyed it. I had Oryx and fries, and the sauce was overly salty, but the starter of raw butterfish was divine, as was the chocolate mousse for dessert. We mostly had the roads to ourselves all around Etosha, and our best animal viewing was around Namutoni - so many giraffe, zebra, some hyenas, rhino, elephants - it was quite spectacular.

We spent one night here after staying at Dolomite and Okaukuejo. We had great wildlife viewing in the eastern section in February with flamingoes in the fishers pan, literally 100s of giraffes in herds, a breeding herd of elephants at Aroe waterhole and a surprise late afternoon rhino sighting at Klein Okevi waterhole.
The grounds are in a state of disrepair which is unfortunate and the reason why I have given 3 stars. The pool area was a construction zone (but no one was working while we were there) and it looks terrible. Also the pool was so cloudy you couldn't see the bottom of the pool which wasn't very appealing. All the wooden walkways need attention - they say this is being fixed up. There was nothing wrong with our room except it was quite out of the way. They advise you to walk to dinner but 2 issues stopped me from doing this - there was a lot of water around so I was concerned at mosquitoes, also walking through the construction areas in the dark didn't seem a good idea. So we were out in the car wildlife viewing and went straight to dinner rather than to our room and walking back.
The room was very large with air conditioning, a fridge and large bathroom. We had an excellent sleep here which was nice. Dinner was a surprise (in a good way). I had vegetarian pesto pasta with baby spinach and cherry tomatoes and it was really good, I thoroughly enjoyed it. My husband had a fish stew which he also said was very good. There are several little curio shops in the fort complex which was nice for a bit of a poke around, excellent range of Namibian fridge magnets! We found the service here to be very good too.
If they can renovate the grounds (quite extensively I'm afraid) then Namutoni will be a lot better, but as it stands it is good value for the rooms despite the maintenance issues.

We really enjoyed this end of the park and did the Fisher Pan circular drive 3 times. There were flamingos on the salt pan - beautiful. We saw a lot of game in Etosha - lions every day.
Namutoni had much friendlier staff that Okaukuejo but the restaurant was just as bad.
We camped and the sites are really nice and spacious. Like Okaukuejo camp as far from the ablution blocks as possible to avoid the Overlanders. You have to negotiate with a security guard at the camping site but if you are mild mannered and defer to his authority you can swop sites as they allocate you a number at reception.
We did a night game which was fantastic and our guide really went out of his way to show us things.

Dears,
Only average because there is no maintenance of the camp, and it can be dangerous to walk around ....
As example: the path to go to the water hole .... Holes everywhere ....
Same pb for the swimming pool ..... Holes everywhere .....
Very dangerous with small children ....
Everything is organized around the German fort, restaurant and bar are inside.
The food is like gambling .... Was nice the first night, and poor on the second ....
The service is very poor (general in Namibia) people don't care ....
The room was correct, it is clean when no power cut :)

Thx

The lodge itself is set around an old fort so is very interesting. The dining facilities were a little shabby and many of the wooden walkways that the place is built around need a bit of attention. The watering hole is a bit more removed and we were not lucky to see much there when we visited. The rooms are large and very comfortable. The bathrooms were also very large but have no door on them. It had a sunken bath and two showers, which gives you a sense of the size. The bungalows are quite close together and there are a lot of them however the place is very quiet and never felt crowded.

Nice lodge, run by NWR, service is average when not poor, tried to get a room at the reception after booking with NWR central office in Windhoek, and the guy at the reception wasn't giving out rooms because the system was offline.had to call the office with my cell while standing in front of him because apparently that's not he could do.
But back to the lodge, the rooms are nice, still new and in good condition, spacious and have a mini bar, air con and mosquito net over the bed.overall really nice.canno't say the same of the restaurant.as of November 2013 only one restaurant is open in the whole camp, and the food is nothing to die for.service was friendly at least.namutoni has a nice waterhole next to the camp and you can sit there and wait, wait and wait till something happens.you can usually spot giraffe, zebras, etc but not very likely to see lions or ellies, if that's your main concern I would suggest you to try and stay in okakuejo, the wildlife is far more over there.

Large rooms, very nice bathrooms and an outside shower if you are feeling a touch more adventurous. Clean classic decor with some nice African touches but not overboard.

My room was close to the watering hole which was handy for early and late trips. Pleasant swimming pool area but quite a small dining room for the size of the hotel.

Room Tip: 21 is near the pool and watering hole
