“Great stay, but cabins need heat!”
Reviewed July 18, 2012 via mobile

Wonderful location near Etosha gate, lodge and tented cabins all built around a watering hole where all kinds of animals come in to drink. The main area around the dining area is very attractive with couches you can sit on and watch the animals come into the watering hole.
The tented cabins are rustic but attractive, beds comfortable, plenty of hot water, the only issue I had was that it was very cold weather and there was no heat in the cabins. There are outlets so no reason why the couldn't have small heaters, radiator if concerned about fire.
The food was wonderful, they will cook whatever eggs you want, lots of variety for breakfast and dinner. Nice selection of wines, drinks.
Staff very accommodating and friendly, great stay, lions and hyenas on the last night, wonderful campfire at night with amazing views of the stars. Also very nice gift shop with more upscale items then you usually find

Thank you for the super feedback you have posted on Andersson’s Camp.

At the time you were visiting camp, there was a very unusual cold spell which moved in over the area. Hot water bottles are provided in the evening, which helps a great deal in taking the edge off the cold and assists guests in warming up so that they can get cosy in bed. There are also extra blankets available in the room and guests may make use of when required.

We are delighted you enjoyed the wonderful food, had good game sightings and found the little gem of a curio shop!

We stayed in many lodges throughout Namibia but this one was a disappointment. The staff stood off in the corners and the main person in charge was trying desperately to do it all.
We went all inclusive and the first night we were the only guests and they clearly did not bother to cook for us. Some dried up roast was pulled from the freezer. Horrible stuff.
The second night was better since I think they overheard us complain. The rooms were super small and there was hardly enough space to get your shoes on. The shower was a tin bucket.
The wildlife was abundant and the watering holes were busy. Looked like an audition for Noah's arc. In contrast to all the other places we felt unwelcome here! This lodge is not owned by Wilderness but rather only managed by them. This is a putty because I know wilderness would do better!

We are really disappointed to hear that your stay at Andersson’s did not meet with your expectations.

Andersson's forms part of the Wilderness Adventures brand, offering an accessible and authentic experience in diverse wilderness areas. We promise simplicity, consistency and affordability, a fun and flexible offering in a relaxed and interactive atmosphere. The main area of these larger camps is the centre of the experience with restaurant and /or buffet style dining. The rooms are smaller and simpler than Wilderness Safaris Classic camps but extremely comfortable . The camp caters to those wanting a value for money experience and /or a family-friendly safari. Game drives are conducted in 9-seater 4x4 vehicles with no guarantee of “window” seats and guests are accompanied by a knowledgeable guide on each activity.

All our food is prepared freshly everyday, whether there are only two guests or a full camp. Our staff has been doing very well recently concerning service and thanks to the additional attention of a Food Experience manager, has seen marked improvement in the food quality and offering.

We are extremely pleased that you encountered an abundance of wildlife whilst staying at the camp, the waterhole being the main attraction for a variety of animals.

Although I've visited Andersson's Camp several times in the past, it was a "first" for my 5 guests. We booked the camp directly after a few days at one of the poshest venues in Namibia and I worried that my friends would be disappointed by the more rustic camp facilities. Not to worry. They loved the time there for the same reasons I do. First, the staff is amazing. Corrie - still capably in charge - Alfonso, and the others make you feel like family. They remember you if you've visited before - and you miss them as soon as you leave. Our guide, Ramon, awed us with his knowledge of the area and his capacity to bring us to consistently excellent sightings. It truly pleased us that he listened to what we wanted. We weren't interested in seeing as many water holes as possible, but were willing to sit patiently and see who might show up. This strategy paid off in some unique game experiences and photo ops. The food is fine. House wine is included with the meal - and the multi-talented staff entertains you post-dinner with their unique songs and dance. The waterhole at Anderssons - just beyond the dining area - is one of the best in the country. You don't have to leave the lodge or the back stoop of your tent to be afforded exceptional game viewing. Accommodations are very basic, but clean and comfortable. I will keep coming back.

Room Tip: The paths are dark at night and the flashlight doesn't penetrate far into the bush. If you'...

Our entire family (parents and three children, 10,8,7) all agreed that this place was our favourite accommodation during our two week tour of Namibia. The tented rooms are comfortable and we liked the eco-friendly design. However, two aspects made the difference for us. Most importantly, the service was excellent and, more significantly for families, flexible (e.g. meal times). Of particular delight to us parents was the way the children were welcomed. Alfonso, in particular, chatted away to the children regularly, passing on his knowledge of the animals. Secondly, we loved the informal atmosphere for meals, spiced up by regular visits to the waterhole by lion, rhino, we missed the cheetah :-(. Highly recommended.

Years ago, my travel agent booked me into Andersson's Camp by mistake. I had enjoyed my previous experience at the main lodge and initially was disappointed at being "downgraded." But I've returned to Andersson's every year since - by design - because the camp has so much to offer. The new manager, Cornelia Adams, is a gem. She went out of her way to be helpful when we ran into problems with our car rental. Beyond this, she seems to be a genuinely pleasant, caring woman - and quite capable of running an efficient lodge. The game drive was excellent and the animal life at the waterhole in the evenings was extraordinary - the best of any we encountered on this year's trip to Namibia (my ninth). The food and accommodations are very basic at Andersson's, but the staff and sightings make up for the lack of luxe. I loved it!

Andersson's Camp is a good mid-range option for Etosha Park. It has a unique rustic atmosphere and is right beside the Etosha gates. It provides an alternative to the accommodation inside the park (which look a bit like motels).
The setting of Andersson's is very nice with the dining area overlooking the watering hole (we saw zebras at breakfast and lions at dinner). The campfire and fireplace make for a very cozy and rustic environment.
The rooms are very simply decorated with natural materials in a modern style. The hot water showers are very welcome luxury in the Namibian winter.
The wildlife in Etosha is abundant. Even on our self drive we were able to find 6 lions, 2 rhinos a breeding herd of elephants and much more.
I think Anderssons is a good affordable option for those looking for something with a bit more charm than the park accommodations.

My favorite thing was the spectacular game drives into Etosha which is very close-by. Good guides. The tents and lounge areas are perfectly nice, on the basic side. Everything still feels new. There is a nice watering hole very close to the lounge area, good game viewing there.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Nestled in mopane scrub on white calcrete soils, Andersson's Camp is situated 4.5km from Etosha's Andersson Gate. The camp was named after Swedish explorer Charles Andersson - one of the first Europeans to 'discover' Etosha, Africa's largest saltpan. The resurrected former farmstead that stands on the site now forms the centre of a charming camp fronting onto a productive waterhole. The 18 tented en-suite units are raised on decks for an enhanced view of the waterhole and surrounding vistas. The camp is an exciting example of sustainable construction; this model of eco-sensitive lodging provides an authentic, safe and down-to-earth experience for small groups, families and independent travellers to the Etosha region and is easily accessible by either road or air. Activities include morning and/or afternoon game drives in Etosha National Park, night drives (on request) and nature walks on Ongava Reserve. Subject to the availability of vehicles and guides, morning and afternoon/evening game drives on Ongava Game Reserve can be arraged at the camp at extra cost. ... more   less
