“Busy city”
Reviewed August 8, 2012

We did a group tour from our hotel. I enjoyed that it was mainly local Egyptians. I am not a big shopper, although I enjoyed looking through their markets to see what things they liked to buy, and shop owners were very friendly. The places of worship looked OK, although I could not understand my tour guide and the significance of most places cause he was speaking another language.

“Awesome Natural Beauty”
Reviewed December 21, 2011

Marsa Matrouh

Marsa Matrouh is a small port on the Mediterranean, but it is reputed to be among the most beautiful beaches in the world. The long stretch of beach line is distinguished by its soft white sand, and calm waters.

For the vegetarians, go and try the fala-fal (fried potatoes stuffed in lebanese type bread with some chopped vegetables too inside). Its awesome when served fresh. And if you are not so fond of trying the local food, surprisingly there is also the options of KFC, Pizza Hut and McDonalds on the Alex street. Yes you find them even in this small town, we did not expect it.
The McDonalds in on the best location along the bay, make sure you reach there before sun sets to enjoy the view.

The places visited by us:

* Ageeba Beach (1st day - started late)
Its around 30 km from the main city and a return trip in a taxi from the city should cost you around 60 EGP and can be further reduced based no your negotiation skills.
Once you reach the place and have a first glance at the blue water, i bet you wil wow, its aweomely blue with varying shades.
This beach is is distinguished by its wonderful natural caves and scenery and is protected by cliffs from 3 sides and hardly 30-40 m wide. You can take a walk to explore the cliffs far west and can rent an umbrella and chairs @ approx. 10 EGP.
Note: There are no toilet/bath/changeroom facitlies available. So come prepared. The only shop is ok only for chips and ice-creams.

* Cleopatra's Beach (2nd day)
This is a rocky beach, hardly any place to lie down or take a dip or swim. But the rocks form beautiful formation both on and off the beach. Just a few metres in the water, you see a huge rock with tunnel like openings on either sides, the waves rush through the opening at an awesome pace and is thrilling with the sound effects (due to closed structure) and is a must see. The path leading to the place is extremely slippery and hence fun too. Queen Cleopatra is believed to bathe here in her time.

* Al-Gharam Beach
On the same route further, you have Al-Gharam beach. The beach is visible from the main city, but since it is not directly connected through land, it takes an approx 20km drive to reach here.
This is a long beach, with almost all water sports available, at a hefty price though (approx 500 EGP/80USD for a 30 min ride on a jet ski). It has got changing rooms/baths/toilets @ 1 EGP per use. The place has a lot of local eateries serving sea food, again at quite huge prices. The umprellas and chairs can be hired here too. Keep your negotiation skills handy here again.

* The Alex street (not sure about the name yet) can be a good walking place in the night. There is a toy train covering the whole stretch of a few km @ 1EGP. Try it to take a cheap tour of the coast line :)

* The City beach (3rd day)
This beach is like a swimming pool (althoguh all the beaches in Mersa Matruoh are extremely calm, this one stands out in the calmness), reason being the formation of a berakwater protecting it from the main sea. Swim as much as you can.

All in all an awesome natural beauty, one of the best in world but still not so famous among the foreigners. Its more of a local holiday destination for the Egyptians. The Ramadan time is a little too crowded, so a calmer time will be better for a visit.
