I serve in the United States Army and don't get as much time with my family as I would like. I grew up in Michigan and wanted to give my family a chance to enjoy Michigan summers & Great Lakes. We chose this place because it had enough beds for everyone and was on Erie. But the pictures don't the cottage justice!
There's nothing like waking up and the first thing your eyes see in the morning is the sunrise over the water through the large bedroom window! It is literally RIGHT ON THE BEACH. My wife and l enjoyed having a great space that included our own bathroom, away from the kids. They loved the bunk floor with 6 beds in 3 areas. Creative & pretty functional. They couldn't get enough of the sand bars or using the kayaks. Most of our time was spent either in the water or on the really big deck. At night, there was a nice movie library & great game area. We just couldn't get enough of listening to the water hit the shore so we ended up hanging outside in the evenings.
It would have easily cost double to house our large family at an area hotel, NOT on the lake, no common area large enough for everybody, eating out every meal. Having a military income with a big blended family, this gave us everything we could want. Our hosts were very nice people & provide a nice, clean, comfortable cottage. This is a perfect place for families with tons of added value!
I was reviewing pictures from one of the BEST family vacations we've had & wanted to share a little goldmine. It was better than Florida trips for several reasons. The location of this gem was AMAZING & was definitely our most favorite part about this trip. It's in a quiet community, somewhat off the beaten path. This cottage with quiet beaches was just what we were looking for. Most days, we had a long stretch of beach all to ourselves. The teenagers were fascinated to find so much beach glass treasures every morning and the kayaks were a really big hit, too. The owners, Starla & Rob, said we HAD to make the most out of the sunrises, so we did. Morning coffee and a barefoot walk along the beach with the most incredible sunrises was therapeutic!
Okay, THE DECK: The wide deck was roomy-enough for our large family to spread out, while we watched boats across the lake. It had a sandy private beach and we were able to keep a close eye on the grand kids splashing & playing on the sandbars while we sat under large shade trees on the deck. At night, we had bonfires just off the deck & roasted hot dogs and marshmallows. We've never stayed anywhere with steps right to the beach before. Also, my mother doesn't get around well and once we helped her up the 2 or 3 wide deck steps, she was able to navigate the main floor easily and never felt left out of the mix of things. This would not be a bad set up for someone with physical limitations.
The cottage was so much bigger than the front picture looks because it's on 3 levels. We loved the cottage feel with the original hardwood floors. It was very clean and comfortable, and it gave us storage for all our stuff. There were 8 beds in all, I think, plus an air mattress that allowed the teenage grandkids to spread out. The bottom floor was perfect for them to hang out and play games on one rainy afternoon while the adults hung out and watch a lightening storm upstairs. We really enjoyed having different levels because it let the adults have time away from the noise of the kids. (Another bonus!)
The eat-in dining room wasn't large enough for all of us at one time but the deck offered so much outdoor seating that it worked out really well. The kitchen has everything you'll need. My husband really made use of the coffee maker and espresso machine. I remember that there were so many kitchen cabinets, so we had lots of space to store enough groceries to feed our little army. Having a washer and dryer on the main floor was an added bonus, too. Bring your own beach towels because you'll probably go through them. My phone wanted to roam so it was nice to have a landline in the cottage.
Starla & Rob were wonderful to work with, enduring a few reservation changes to accommodate us. We were able to have 12 people under the same roof very inexpensively. WE CAN'T SAY ENOUGH ABOUT THIS PLACE! We're definitely coming back this year!
