Owner description: Unguided, below-ground tours of abandoned copper mine. Tries to present realistic portrayal of what miners experienced during their daily work underground.

This small mine tour is self-guided and privately owned. The owner has two adorable pet skunks (with the scent glands removed, don't worry) and a very nice train set in the reception building. All you have to do is watch a safety video, put on a hard hat and take a walk down the stairs into the mine. When you get to the bottom of the stairs, there's a small picnic area to the left (a great lunch location on a hot summer day), and to the right is the rest of the shaft. It's a very cool experience, and I highly recommend giving it a shot. Don't miss out on the other attractions while you're there, though! There is a lot of antique equipment on the grounds and it is all very interesting to see. Check it out!

Absolutely terrible waste of money. We originally stopped here on our way to copper harbor and thought it would be a good historical and informative stop. The staff was completely asinine and snotty towards us the moment we walked in the door. The kids slipped on the tiny stairs and the tunnels are sparcely lighted with the majority of areas in the dark. There are a lot of bats, so if you are squeemish this is not the tour for you. Definitely not something for kids or people looking for an informative experience. There are many other mines in the area that are better worth your time and money.

You walk down (and therefore up also) 100 steps to the mine It is self guided with some placards of information. It gives a different perspective when you walk the mine. Interesting if you are in the area but I think the Quincy Mine in Hancock was more informative.

The mine was great. We went to it on the last day of our vacation. We have a 17 year old daughter and a 14 year old son. They enjoyed it as well. It was neat to be in a mine, especially after watching the rescue in Chili. A good adventure and wear a warm sweatshirt! As far as the pet skunks go... I was not a fan of them....sorry. My son loved them though! If you are thinking of a family vacation in this area, here is what we did and some recommends. For our "home base" we rented a home for the week via VRBO.com. Our rental home was located on Portage Lake and was beautiful . It was right on the water, incredible sunsets, peaceful mornings and awesome temperatures--the weather that is, the water was cold:). We rented bikes from Cross Country Sports in Calumet and rode the Swede Town Trails. Excellent!! Great prices as well. We took a day visiting lighthouses and beaches on Superior. This could easily have taken a couple of days but we were running out of time. We also spent a day shopping and hanging out at our house, swimming, fishing etc. On the 4th of July we made our way up to Copper Harbor. An absolute must is "Keweenaw Adventure Company" in Copper Harbor to do a Kayak trip. We did two sunset paddles. We got rained out half way through our 4th of July fireworks paddle so they gave us a rain check and we came back a couple days later and did another sunset paddle. Really fun and they were great at the office and the guides were great as well. You can shop in Copper Harbor too, though I think Calumet is the best shopping. If you are in Houghton stop at the Suomi for breakfast or lunch. Very cute, good prices with a Finnish flare to mark the areas history. The Restaurant was started by a man who immigrated to Houghton with his family. (I know this because his daughter was our neighbor at our rental home!).
It was a great family vacation. I hope we can go again! Love VRBO.com!!!! Made the trip affordable.(If you are into Christian Fiction you should read the Rock Harbor series by Collen Cobel to get you in the mood--not a 5 star book but makes you fall in love with the area.)
