“An inspiring experience”

Alden Dow Home and Studio

Alden Dow was a student of Frank Lloyd Wright and, in my opinion, took Wright's philosophy and practice to the next level. This is a large facility, but it has a lot ideas for designing and decorating spaces both large and small. Experiencing the intimate client receiving area--with windows level with the surrounding pond--then moving to the expansive living/dining area provides a real uplift to my spirits every time I visit; this was my fourth. Also highly recommended are the annual special tours of nearby homes designed by Dow--get on their mailing list from their web site.

We have seen several Frank Lloyd Wright homes - all beautiful and original - but this is by far the most different, exciting and original home/studio we have ever seen!

The design and engineering is amazing! The colorful decor is beautiful and to think it was built in the 1930s is mind-boggling!

Dow was a masterful architect and this home is a testament to his genius!

You might see the Alden Dow Home and Studio when walking through Dow Garden's, but taking a tour opens a fascinating world of design, family life, and fun. The house is amazing. The engineering of the uni-block construction is fascinating. The submarine room is unique. Seeing this masterpiece of architecture is worth the time.

This large low building in Midland Michigan on a multi-acre site was designated a National Historical Landmark. It served as both the home and architectural studio of one of Michigan's most famous architects, Alden B. Dow. He was the son of Dow Chemical Company founder, Herbert Henry Dow. Alden B. Dow's works included a number of residences, churches, public buildings, and commercial buildings.

He was heavily influenced by the work of architect, Frank Lloyd Wright who he briefly worked for at Wright's Taliesin Studio in Spring Green, Wisconsin, Their buildings all accentuated the horizontal, had wide overhang soffits, and were designed to uniquely blend the building with the site they were on. Dow designed much of the interior of his residences including built-in furniture.

Much of the interior furnishings are still in the studio and home, as are many fine old model railroad engines, train cars, and other toys etc. which Dow collected.

The tour was led by an informative docent who did an outstanding job. Make you reservation early.
