“Very bare basics”
Reviewed April 3, 2013

If you are not looking for more than a clean bed and running water then this is your place. The room was large and clean. The bathroom was not large but it too was clean. The heat worked really well, the thermostat not so well. We were unable to turn it down and keep it down. The room was far enough from the road that you didn't hear the traffic. But the heater, water, wind, whatever it was made enough noise to make up for it. Our room was not cleaned, the beds not made nor the garbage emptied when we got back after being gone all day. There is not a coffee pot or alarm clock. The tv lists many channels but we could only view a small portion of them. It is not horrible but you can get better/more for the same price.

Let's face it, you don't go to Marshall, MI for the great hotels, but every year I spend one night in Marshall before a swap meet they have every March. In the past I stayed at the Arbor Inn, but decided to try Howards this year. They're both 1950's era motels à la Bates Motel fame if you’re a Hitchcock fan, and are both owned by different very friendly Indian families.

My room was partially renovated although had peeling wallpaper in the bathroom and a bare wooden stud visible where they’d done some work but didn’t finish. Someone got a little exuberant with a calking gun in the bathroom, but they get 'A' for effort and 'F' for the professionalism of the calking job.

Thinking a place like this would be a wonderful haven for bedbugs, I tore the bed apart and carefully inspected it with my high-intensity ‘maglite’ and saw no evidence of the critters. I felt safe. (Some motels completely enclose the mattress in a cover to keep the critters out but they don’t do that here).

There were drafts coming from under and around the door, and the window but you could turn up the heat and keep the room warm.

They had a flat screen TV but no wireless internet (I think).

The lady who checked me in had coffee ready earlier than they normally do since she knew I’d be checking our earlier. A nice touch!

No coffee machine in the room (I think).

Unlike Arbor Inn where you couldn’t wash soap off no matter how you tried, taking a shower at Howard's was a snap and the soap washed right off. They must treat the water here. I don’t remember any hydrogen sulfide odor of the water either, like the Arbor Inn.

If you’re more discerning where you sleep, ‘Firekeepers’ casino is about 4 miles West, right off I-94, and has a huge hotel and there’s some chain motel place there too.

All-in-all, if all you need is a place to crash in Marshall, and don’t need a chocolate on your bed or a ‘turn down’, this is the place for you. If for any reason, they’re full, Arbor Inn is almost a carbon copy except you can’t wash soap off there. As of this writing, they were both around $45-50 a night. I made my reservations for Howards on-line. I don’t think Arbor Inn has on-line reservations.
