The humble setting with limited indoor and outdoor space and cash-only policy might fool you. This is not your ordinary takeout joint. This is the domain of the delightful Aoy, and you are "boyfriend" or "girlfriend" the minute you walk in the door. I'm so blessed and privileged that my first experience with Thai cuisine was with Aoy, who even though busy serenely made suggestions about what I might like and customized the meal to be "not too hot." She says that she cooks to order for every customer and she truly made us feel special! So grateful that my daughter remembered this spot near Northern Michigan University and suggested it for early-dinner/late lunch. Portions are huge, prices small and the spirit of Aoy and her friendly counterguy was sweet, energetic and truly so caring in making sure that we liked our pad Thai, chicken satay and spring rolls. Coconut milk soup with chicken was amazing and the things she does with cilantro are incredible! Fresh veggies, yummy noodles, this is a must-stop for anyone who enjoys this cuisine or would like to try it. Weekend hours limited.

FIrst Aoy! Need I say more? She is kind and generous and a wonderful cook. The rice paddy is your typical street food. Its cook as you order it right on the spot. The food is flavorful and wonderful. And my god you cant beat the price! Ive read some of the bad reviews on here and I guess to each their own. In this case I find most of the bad reviews probably mad by people who complain about everything or find themselves to be above such "dive." This place has absolutely no pretense and thus does not cater to the pretentious. Keeping the overhead low means meals at a value and what Aoy saves on overhead she passes on not only to the customer but to her altruistic ventures back in her native Thailand (see operation Aoy). I have been coming to the Rice Paddy since I was a fresh at NMU and will continue until the either I or it is gone, I hope I go first! Thank Aoy, keep cooking!

I've been going here since they opened in the mid-80's. This is primarily a take-out Thai restaurant, with limited indoor and outdoor seating. Important to note: cash only, and will often accept local checks.

The Pad Thai has been written about near and far by travel writers, including being featured in Lonely Planet. It is fab!

Everything is made to order. All of the sauces are housemade. Anything fried, is stuffed and wrapped on site. The cheese wontons are also top notch!

Here you will get one part sassy Thai head chef and one part great food made to order. This is a popular place with the local college crowd. The menu prices haven't changed in years... average entree price is about $5.50 - for a heaping portion.

Note that during busy times, it is best to phone in an order (when possible)... wait times can be 45 to 60-minutes. Also - closed Saturday, and open Sunday - noon to about 5pm.

...not much else going for this place except that it's a quick takeout of freshly made Asian/Thai food that has a small amount of vegetables and/or meat for the price. Value is lacking. It's near NMU so the clientele seems to be mostly students, a few people who work in the area and some neighborhood residents.

It's not really a place you would drive out of your way to get something because the quality seems to be inconsistent. Most times the orders seem to be too greasy but that may be due not to specifically asking for a drier dish. Problem is that the owner does not seem to be customer service oriented or maybe she is just used to the students who will take anything as presented.

The owner does let it be known that she supports a village in her native Thailand. She uses some of her profits to make trips back to her homeland loaded with gifts and items that will help them.
