We were traveling through Marquette on our way to Duluth and a friend recommended Vierling's. We had an hour wait for a table on a Thursday night in August so we hung out at one of the local brew pubs for a bit. Jen, our server, was exceptionally personable and efficient. The smoked whitefish appetizer with dill spread and apples was fabulous. Loved the whitefish chowder as well. The salads were fresh and crisp with plenty of dark greens. We tried the whitefish three ways, Cajun, with the creamy artichoke topping and the seafood encrusted; all fresh, local and delish. Try the blueberry wheat beer!

We arrived early for lunch to secure a table in the back overlooking the harbor, and we were not disappointed. Molly was an awesome server, fun and friendly, and we loved the blueberry wheat beer with blueberries in the bottom of the glass! The deep-fried whitefish basket with excellent fries and cole slaw were more than we could manage, but we gave it our best shot.

Since we have a summer place over near Wetmore, MI, we never know when we will end up in Marquette at supper time and so rarely make reservations. It has never been a problem before but on August 18th this place was hopping! We decided to scare seats at the bar and order our drinks and dinner there as they had a two hour wait with tables reserved. As it turned out we did land the table in the front window after a bit and had a thoroughly delightful evening.

Able service from both bartender and waitress who served up my cosmo while my dinner partner sampled the Pale Ale and the Honey Ginger IPA and we enjoyed the French Brie appetizer served warm with crackers, walnuts, raspberry jam and crisp apple slices.

I kept to my tried and true favorite entree of the Paul Grant Pasta: sautéed mushrooms, tomato and garlic over creamy linguine, topped with muenster cheese and broiled. I had mine plain but it can be served topped with chicken, shrimp, or veggies. It was excellent as usual and a large enough serving that half went home for a left-over supper the next night.

My partner tried the Whitefish Special of the Day which was served broiled with a seafood stuffing mixture spread on top before the broiling. The fish was well prepared, but she found the "stuffing" a bit "odd", it was her only comment and she did finish it. The fish was served with a lovely wild rice mixture which is one of their several starch choices.

We got our growler refilled with the Pale Ale and off we went to view the meteor showers!

Patience and cheerfulness pay off here as their busiest times are at the beginning and ending of the college terms. Other times there is often a short wait, but nothing like when it is "back to school time". Reservations might be best, especially if you have a large group.

If you like Whitefish and Craft Beers, then the Vierling is your place. They have a double IPA that is very good. The Whitefish is served with soup or salad, potatoes and vegetables. The bar is friendly and it is a good place if you are in town on business and are looking for a local spot.
