“Incredible!”

Well worth the time and effort. We took the "difficult" path up although it wasn't bad at all. The view from the top is breathtaking and invigorating! Don't miss this!

“Well worth it!”
Reviewed October 1, 2011

I can't imagine visiting Marquette and not going to Sugarloaf. It's only a few miles west of this small town. A bit difficult to find so get good directions. Once you can get to County Road 550, you can just go a few miles until you see the fairly large wooden sign and the parking lot (on your right when you start from Marquette). It's not a hard climb. There are two paths, one marked difficult and one marked easy. The one marked easy was closed. But the trek up the "difficult" path wasn't all that tough and people of all ages were doing it (I'm 73 and had no trouble). There are sections of stairs as you near the top (there's just under 200 stairsteps in all) and they are spaced apart giving you good breaks in between each section. Plus there are a couple benches where you can sit down (I'm not in great shape and didn't need them--we just paused for a few seconds now and then). The view from the top is well worth your trouble. It doesn't take all that long, either. From the time we left the parking lot until we were back at our car was one hour and seven minutes and we didn't hurry, as we took a lot of pictures at the top. Very nice attraction and much better for us "old" people than Lakenenland was.

“Great short hike with rewarding views”

Take the time to make this hike - the views are amazing! It's a short hike but with a number of wooden stairs.

“Lovely climb though beautiful forest to a gorgeous lake and mountain view”
Reviewed July 20, 2011

Sugarloaf mountain has been a destination for Marquette residents and visitors for almost a century. In 1921 members of what may have been the first Boy Scout troop in the United States carried rocks from Lake Superior up to the summit to build a monument to their first troop leader, Bart King, killed in WWI. The site is now owned by the county, which maintains the parking lot and trails. There are stairs to help with the steepest parts of the trail and benches to stop and catch your breath. At the top, decks make it easy to move around and find the perfect photo.
It's a family friendly destination and dogs are welcome. At the top you can see great views of Marquette to the southeast and the Huron mountains to the northwest. Lake Superior is spread beneath you. In July you may be able to find blueberries on top. In the fall it's a great place to get pictures of the autumn colors.
