We had reservations last week at the Clarion, when we arrived we were overcome by the bugs. There were swarms everywhere. We could hardly get into our room. The room was ok. We had booked a two room suite with a really nice view of the lake. The décor was a little dated but it would have been ok. There were several bugs in the room. We called to the front desk and they explained that the whole area had this midge problem. We said we did not think we wanted to stay here. They called a few other hotels for us and we ended up staying at the Hamilton Inn Select they told us they would pay the difference in price. We did not get the lake view that I was looking for but they did offer to pay the difference and the hallways to the rooms were all indoor so there were no bugs which was a plus. We did receive copies of the bills from both hotels and they assured us we would not be charged the difference. As of now we thought that was good customer service at the Clarion and were satisfied with our experience at the Clarion. We did not have the breakfast, see the inside pool area or the game room. Everyone had mentioned that the bugs were the worst they have seen in several years but it was because of such a bad winter.

Room Tip: If you are staying by the Lake it is well worth the extra money for the view if you like that kind of thing. I really had hoped for a lake view. It would have been much better for me to watch the ferries and ships pass by out of my room. But my kids did not seem to mind. They were just happy to swim in the pool and the "indoor water parks".

The front desk staff were not overly friendly. They were decent but certainly did not exert any extra effort to ensure a nice stay. The pool was nice & large but the "game room" was stuffed with mattresses and extra junk. In general the hotel seemed dated. The room was spacious (two room suite) and the view was excellent. Unfortunately there were so many bugs it was difficult to use the deck but it was a beautiful Lake Huron view behind the screen door. Although not terrible, I think I would try a different hotel if we visit Mackinaw again.

We are frequent visitors to Mackinaw City but this was our first time staying at the Clarion. We were pleased with the rate and our room was clean and comfortable. The staff was friendly. We especially enjoyed the breakfast the next morning - which far exceeded our expectations! We would stay there again and have already recommended it to a friend who plans to visit Mackinaw City this Summer.

This was our first time staying at the Clarion in Mackinaw. It was a great price with a generous breakfast buffet compared to the standard free breakfasts. The room was nice and overlooked the beach. There is a strange quirk to the hotel layout. If you stay in the beach front rooms you have several short steps you have to go up/down to get to your room. Not difficult, but if you have strollers or a lot of luggage, you will have to carry it up/down those steps. Unfortunately, we didn't get to enjoy the balcony because of the bugs! Apparently this is the norm in May in this area. It's like a horror movie swarm. Of course, that's not the hotels fault :) All of the staff we interacted with were very friendly and helpful. It was also only a short walk to the main shopping areas.

We stayed 2 nights at this hotel when visiting Mackinac Island. It is a very nice hotel for the money. We had a lakefront room with 2 queen beds, which were very comfortable, and a sofa bed. The room was very spacious compared to other hotels I have stayed in. It offers a free hot breakfast in the morning which had a nice variety - make your own waffles, scrambled eggs, biscuits and gravy, sausage along with cereals and many other cold choices. The hotel is next door to the Arnold Ferry line which is really convenient when visiting Mackinac Island. The hotel is located near the end of the Main Street so it is a little bit of a walk to get into town but is a very easy walk. I would definitely recommend this hotel if you are looking to stay in the area.

Room Tip: We had a 3rd floor lakefront room. It requires a combination of both elevator and stairs to get to. If you are unable to climb stairs, I would avoid this area.
