Clarion Hotel Beachfront
Ranked #21 of 40 Hotels in Mackinaw City
Reviewed June 11, 2013

We stayed in room 121 and it was just average nothing special even though labeled and executive suite. I had booked this room in April online and specifically called the reservation center (I thought the hotel directly) to specify that we would need a ground floor room as my husband cannot drag suitcases up stairs. Of course, there was no record because this hotel actually closes in the off season and all reservations go through the general reservation line which you are never told about. They did try to accommodate us and we did ultimately get a downstairs room with a couch and refrigerator. But, the refrigerator is no more than a cube shaped office sized refrigerator. This hotel is certainly not completely accessible although it purports to be. It reminds you of a lot of British hotels in the odd configuration of the stairs. In order to get to our room we had to go down a ramp from the parking lot to the room level. In order to get to the breakfast room, you can get there without using stairs but it requires that you walk across the parking lot because there is no elevator in the lakeside building. If it was raining you have no choice but to get wet or climb stairs. The breakfast is average to poor. There are signs everywhere that are very strident about not removing food from the room. However, when there is a bus load of guests in there seating becomes really iffy. They do have eggs, sausage, biscuits and gravy, toast (white and wheat), bagels, English muffins, cold cereals, fresh and cut fruit, but no yogurt. The internet is a complete joke. The only way you can maintain a signal from this room is if no one is also in your area and trying to use the internet. I attempted to print a critical document in their business center and even their own computers lost the signal twice. Never did get the document printed. It definitely needs a complete renovation. The ice machine in the lakeside room building looks like it needs a complete renovation as it leaks and rattles and looks very unsanitary. I certainly wouldn't trust the cleanliness of the ice from there. The room was clean, but dingy and dark with minimal lighting. The carpets are tired and the furniture had an odd odor. The bed, however, was comfortable. The room had one table, one chair and a couch but you couldn't watch TV except from the seat on the couch closest to the bed because the TV is in a cabinet that faces the bed the doesn't pull forward, so even if you are on the couch, you lose about 25% of the picture. The bathroom is large and clean, but the water pressure reminds you of a slow moving stream. You might expect that on the top floor, but certainly not on the ground floor. The water doesn't come out of the shower head hard enough to actually make a spray, more like a medium dribble. The bugs (midgies) are absolutely completely out of control and in the morning the dead ones were almost snow drifted in the corners. Fortunately, they are just a nuisance and don't bite, but nevertheless, at least the hotel should attempt to eliminate them by spraying their bushes in the area. I made the mistake of bumping a bush when parking and the swarm that came out of the bush was like a cloud. The bottom line is that how this hotel maintains a AAA 3 star rating is beyond me. And, how they have maintained a Clarion level name is also a mystery. This is the second time we have stayed here, the last being seven years ago, and we made the mistake of staying here again. It won't happen again. It was a reminder as to why I normally stay at Hampton Inns, Holiday Inn Express and Marriott brands and not the Clarion/Comfort/Quality brand. If you are going to stay in Mackinaw City, there are better places to stay. Read the reviews carefully and pass on this hotel. There is one good point and that it is in reasonable walking distance from the Arnolds ferry dock to Mackinac Island. And the local trolley does loop through the hotel.

Room Tip: Be careful to check the accessibility of your room. Not all rooms are reachable by the elevator. Lot...

We recently stayed at this hotel in Room 421 and overall were very disappointed. It was obvious there was no preventative bug spraying and the bug situation was out of control and rendered the balcony overlooking the lake un-useable. Windows and doors did not close and seal properly leaving various method for the flying insects to enter the room. The room general condition would be considered poor at best. Obvious signs of water damage from a roof leak and what appeared to be black mold around the water stained areas. The carpet did not appear to be clean either. The only aspect that I would consider fair would be the bed. The bed was reasonably comfortable.

The exterior of the hotel looks very nice but frommy perspective it is lipstick on a Pig. It looks nice from the outside but bottomline it is still a pig of a hotel.

Based on our experience, our next stay in Mackinaw City will be at a different hotel.

The room was clean and the beds were comfortable, the only thing was the over sized dresser took up so much room that there wasn't even a small desk, which we appreciate having. Also the mini-fridge and microwave were in the bathroom because of the design of the room.

The breakfast area included hot foods, and was large with plenty of room between the tables.

There is a small beach area behind the hotel which would be fun to relax at if the weather had been warmer. It was still nice to go back there and see the lake after dinner.

I applaud the on site manager of this lovely hotel. His behavior on the phone and in person reflected his kindness, obvious commitment to the comfort of his guests, and his concern for the welfare and treatment of his employees. Specifics: my room was not ready upon my arrival, so I offered to "walk around" a bit, while waiting. Instead, despite a full house, I was immediately given a room (spacious and even nicer than the one I had reserved). In every way, I was made to feel welcome. Memorial Day weekend is hectic anywhere there are tourists, but the long lines and other challenges the staff faced did not deter their pleasant, professional demeanor. The breakfast room is the largest and sunniest I've seen, again staffed by pleasant, smiling people; despite the continual stream of guests in the fully occupied hotel, the coffee pot, waffle mix, scrambled eggs, biscuits and gravy, sausage and breads were kept stocked. No yogurt or half and half, but that's a quibble; there was plenty of cereal, oatmeal, and mixed cut fruit, along with the requisite condiments like cream cheese and peanut butter. Really nice pool, exercise equipment, electronic games for kids. Located on the south end of town, still an easy walk to the center of things, and quieter. Highly recommended.

Room Tip: Rooms on the beach are more expensive. Opt for one if the view is important. I was on the third flo...

I recently visited with my girl scout troop and their moms. The staff were very helpful in putting us in adjoining rooms and all together. We had seven courtyard rooms and all of them were very nice and clean. The pool is in a separate building in between the two buildings of rooms. It was also clean and the girls said the water was warm. The breakfast room was in the opposite building than our rooms. The food was your standard continental breakfast with waffles. It was nice to grab a quick breakfast before catching the ferry. The pool and breakfast room having to be accessed from outside was a tiny bit inconvenient but that was because it was freezing outside. Had the weather been nicer it would not have mattered.

First, it seems there just isn't much from which to choose when it comes to a Mackinaw City hotel. I chose this one because it was the only one I saw that didn't include in its photo those nasty polyester bedspreads. So, it had that going for it . . . but not much else. We had a room with two queen beds and it had too much furniture, or the wrong kind of furniture. If two people are in the room, it is very difficult to move. And one can't access the giant armoire without blocking the tiny little path to the bathroom. There is a table and chairs in front of the heating/cooling unit that makes it difficult to access the temperature controls. It's also difficult to regulate the temperature and the unit is incredibly loud. The beds are uncomfortable -- lumpy and soft. Between the noise from the heating/cooling system, the extreme fluctuations in temperature (with the unit on it became far too hot and with it off, far too cold) and the saggy bed, we got very little sleep.

The hotel does sit on the beach. Well, part of it does. It, like the rooms within, is designed awkwardly. I took a stroll on the beach; It's a rather ugly stretch of beach and, I think, not terribly conducive to beach activities.

A breakfast buffet is offered . . . in a second story room in another wing of the hotel. It seemed like a very small selection was scattered around a very large space. We decided to go into town and have breakfast instead.

There were a couple positive aspects: The room was actually clean (but it did smell of stale smoke), even though it was worn and out of date. Check-in and check-out were very quick and the front desk staff very polite.

Overall, though, I was not particularly impressed with this property.
