“Home base for a weekend getaway”

We were there in September 2011, just before the fall colours really started showing. We had a room overlooking the lake. Watching the sunrise from the warm comfort of bed was an unexpected treat. Breakfast was busy but good. Room was clean and comfortable. The only negative was the cool dash from the pool back to our room (pool was in separate building). We were pleased to find the rail trail (biking and jogging) just across the road from the hotel. Nice walk into town for shopping (fudge and pasties!) We would stay there again.

We visited the area in October 2011 and the price of a beach front room was very reasonable. The front desk staff was very helpful and polite. Our room was large, clean and comfortable. I was a little concerned about the noise level from the parking lot or people walking by and it was very quiet in the room. The breakfast on the other had was a little disappointing but that really is no big deal. We were able to find something to tie us over for a while. Our overall experience was wonderful. We will definitely stay here again.

First off let me start by saying that the room was very clean, the maids were very tentative and did everything that was expected.
Cons: Exterior Corridors - Not so much an issue in the summer but at the time of year we went (October 1&2) it was quite chilly. I had choose this hotel over the Best Western which we had stayed at before because I thought it was indoor corridors. This is not by fault of the hotel, I just sort of assumed from the pictures as I had not looked close enough and it is listed under the amenities as being outdoor.
Pool - Although 10 times cleaner than the indoor water park at the Bridge Vista that you have access to when staying here, the depths are way off. It says 3 feet at the stairs and this is not true. My 45'' tall son could not touch even next to the wall so it was over his head. Had we known this, we would have brought some sort of floatation device for him.
Hot Tub - Depth is again way off, this is not 3 ft deep it is less, probably because the jets are somehow pointed upwards and doesn't really jet the hot tub, it more or less pumps water up over the sides.
Hotel Info - Normally most hotels have a little book with their hotel policies, pool hours, fitness hours, breakfast hours, and contact information. This hotel had nothing. All of the key cards to the rooms have advertisements on them for local businesses and the only booklet in the room had 4 pieces of laminated paper with advertisements as well. No hotel information at all.
Elevator Access - As far as I could tell there is only 1 elevator for the entire Hotel and being that their are 3 separate buildings containing rooms from 2-4 floors only 1 building has an elevator. So if you are on the 2nd floor of the back building and want to go to breakfast then you have to go down the stairs and then up the elevator or stairs to the next building to get to that 2nd floor where you can then walk all the way to the front of the hotel for breakfast. This would not be to horrible if the hotel were enclosed.
Parking - When we visited it was not "Peak" season. Had it been, there would have been a parking concern. Seemed that folks were having trouble finding a parking spot at all when coming in for the night. Not an issue for us personally as we walked everywhere but for others, even older folks it was a huge inconvenience. Not sure if they have the ability to use the parking at Arnold Ferry's but they definitely needed more space.
Smoking - It is a law in Michigan that you cannot smoke in public buildings, most hotels actually inform you that you cannot smoke on the balconies or exterior walkway's either. However after seeing several people smoking outside their room doors on the 3rd floor I figured it was best to ask. I called the front desk and they informed me that it is illegal to smoke within 5 feet of a building. If they had their policy information in the rooms like most hotels, then that would not have been a concern. I will not dis-obey the law and went out to my car to smoke, but the fact that the policy information was not readily available was concerning.
Arcade/Game Room - If a hotel chooses to have a game room or arcade of any sort, a change machine should also be offered. Unfortunately it was not. My husband put $1 into a candy machine in the game room to get change but ended up loosing the dollar. At that time he went to the front office to inform this of it and get his money back and the man at the desk said that they don't own the machine so it is not their problem. He did eventually give my husband the dollar that was lost, but he could have been nicer about it and more willing to help. Honestly in this economy every dollar matters and the fact that the man running the front desk thought that it was not his problem was a bummer. Seriously the only other way to get your money back is from the company that vends the machine, which we can't wait around for since it was a Sunday and the last day of our trip, when the office can easily get reimbursed on behalf of us.
Service - The service was just simply average. When we arrived, after checking in we drove to the building that housed our room and found that the door was wide open. My husband checked the room to find no one in it, or any issues other than a towel holding open the door. After checking with the front desk we found it was because the maid had left it there as a reminder to refill the cups in the room which she had already done but left the door. Mind you this was a 50 degree day and it was quite chilly in the room once we got in. The accents of the lady running the front desk on Friday was awesome and she seemed quite cheery, but this was the only day that anyone had a smile, so their service was just simply average.
A/C/Heat - The Heat worked in the room, maybe a little too much, possible a thermostat reading issue. However the A/C never did. When it got to warm in the room we turned on the A/C to help cool it off and it only stayed on for a few seconds and then stopped. The next day when it was warmer outside we did the same and it never really worked.
Shower - The water pressure is ridiculous!!!!! There isn't any. It almost feels like the plumbing wasn't vented or something as it just kind of dribbles out. It took forever to rinse the conditioner out of my hair as the pressure was simply nothing. Also because of this some of the water just dribbles out of the shower head straight onto the spout for the bath and therefore splashes the side of the tub and the floor. I tried to keep the shower curtain pulled in as far as possible so it would only splash the curtain but it just didn't work.

Pro's: Free Breakfast - Although it is just a hotel breakfast it is still included with the room so you eat it anyway. We made the mistake of deciding to eat breakfast at a restaurant as we had hotel breakfast for 4 days in between Traverse City and Mackinaw, and the Hotel breakfast was much better, so the free one is fine.
Clean - The room was very clean, not anything to gripe about.
View - The view is amazing, especially at sun rise, although I wish some of the tourists would not stand directly on the water line as they kind of ruined the only 1 day sun rise pics we were able to get due to the weather. I don't know about everyone else, but I would like my sun rise pictures without strangers in them. If only they would stand back about 15 feet, they could still capture the same pictures with a 15 foot difference.
Price - This hotel was extremely affordable but was comparable to the others in the area on price. And as well as the rest of the hotels we were able to book the ferry and carriage ride in advance.
Beds - The pillow-top beds were extremely comfortable. Probably one of the best hotel beds we have ever slept on.
Room - The room was very well put together, I do wish though that the little refrigerators were on stands of some sort as they are small and hard to put things in when you can't see the inside that close to the floor.

All in all, we would probably not be staying at this hotel again, unless it was the last room left for the whole city. It beats the prices of the island, but for as many con's as there were, I don't think I will stay again.

My husband and I had a great time for 2 days. The Clarion is a wonderful place to stay. The room was setup beautiful and roomy. It does come with micro and fridge. The view was excellent right on the sandy beach. Patio you can go out on and and see boats coming and going. There is no question we will return in June and bring the children. Also, another couples trip next Sept 2012. Breakfast was free and very good. The Pool and hot tube area was great. We had a hot tube room with the LAKEFRONT VIEW. Just wonderful. Elaine was the housekeeper she is a jewel. Everyone there was wonderful. This is going to be a yearly thing. We got exactly what we wanted. Pay for package with room so well worth it. STAY AWAY FROM DIXIE'S RESTUARANT. SERVICE SUCK..STEAKS NASTY. ORDERED WELL GO RARE TWICE. HAD TO JUST GET THE FISH AND CHIPS..

Room Tip: Depends on your preference. If you want Lakefront view and access to ferries also quite and cozy. C...

Stayed here for 2 nights while visiting Mackinac Island. It provided a good location for a day trip to the island at a much lower cost than staying on the island, and we had plenty of time to visit with convenient access to the ferries. We had a great suite with 2 bedrooms and a connecting bathroom with separate sink area. This was perfect for our group of grandparents, parents, and 3 year old. The hotel pool was nice, and we also tried the small "water park" provided at one of the nearby hotels. This was perfect for our 3 year old, although I'm not sure if older kids would be bored by it. It was definitely too cold for the beach, but we did enjoy a walk in the sand. The advertised 25' breakfast buffet was pretty standard and lacked some items like fresh fruit and yoghurt routinely provided at smaller hotels. It was still nice to have with the generally high cost of food in the area.

I was a little reluctant, given some of the other reviews I had read. The walls are thin so we could hear showers running, toilets flushing and voices, but since we visited in the off season, it wasn't bad after 10PM. The location is great to catch Arnold's ferry to Mackinac Island. Its a short walk. The small beach is not a bad place to relax. Breakfast was typical and adequate.
