Owner description: A point in the storm and a guiding beacon since 1889, Old Mackinac Point Lighthouse helped passing ships navigate through the treacherous waters of the Straits of Mackinac. There's just as much to see from the top of the tower as inside the original buildings. Authentically restored quarters and exhibits, including the original lens and the Straits of Mackinac Shipwreck Museum, this "Castle of the Straits" is a true gem of the Great Lakes.

Brought 12 Cadette Girl Scouts to tour the lighthouse. They really enjoyed going up to the top and the view was well worth it! The highlight seemed to be the video they show in the building outback though. It is a must for history buffs. It tells of many of the ship wrecks in the straights.

“A Landmark To Look For.”
Reviewed July 15, 2013

It's a pretty neat light house. The beach and the view from this spot is very interesting. If you are there around on a clear day you might even catch a beautiful sunset right behind the beach.

The light house itself is good. I wouldn't say excellent. I have seen much better and beautiful light houses around the world but given the fat that there is not much in Mackinac City, this is definitely a good place to go. Also there are the little shopping strip right around the area.

A good place to go.

Lovely lighthouse tour, home restoration, and gift shop area. The view from the top of the lighthouse is unmatched. Just make sure you wear good sturdy shoes!

“Great history, beautiful views, and tight quarters”
Reviewed July 11, 2013

The Old Mackinac Point Lighthouse is a must-visit. The building is wonderfully preserved and the staff is very knowledgable. The movie can be a little much for smaller kids (lots of details about the ships that sunk), but interesting for older kids and adults. The gift shop has some interesting items for sale, unlike the rest of Mackinac City which is VERY touristy.

The tour is great, but the spiral staircase is tight and one spot can be tough for taller people (had to sit on a stair and duck under a platform above). There's also a roughly 10-foot tall ladder to get to the top that a few people declined. Shouldn't be a problem for most, but may be a challenge for those who don't like tight spaces or heights. Unlike other lighthouses, you can't go outside at the top, but it's still very enjoyable. Highly recommend!
