“Must see”
Reviewed August 7, 2014

This was one of our favorites on our trip. The ship is right by Shepler's Ferry, so you can easily walk there. You get to walk through the ship, and it is mostly a self guided tour. However, they do have a couple of docents there that will speak with you, one of which used to serve on the ship. He was fun to talk to. The other nice thing is that the ship was put into museum status within two weeks of being decommissioned, so it was never torn apart for parts. And you get to tour all three levels. To me, this is a must see ship.

“Educational/Historical Great Lakes Must-See”
Reviewed July 31, 2014

This is a must-see for everyone trying to get a sense for what the Great Lakes are all about. The most interesting part was a talk with a docent in the engine room who shared a lot of really interesting information of this true "Queen of the Great Lakes".

It was a great experience that was also a bit emotional as they played videos across the ship of the decommissioning ceremony (and commissioning ceremony of the new USCGC Mackinaw (WLBB-30)). This gave a real sense of how much of an impact this ship has had throughout its service.

I was also pleasantly surprised that a local business owner (who runs one of the ferry services to Mackinac Island) donated the dock to prevent this great ship from being scrapped.

The one thing to keep in mind is that the stairs are very steep so you have to help/secure small children. I would definitely recommend one adult per kid.

“Great Time”
Reviewed July 31, 2014 via mobile

Very interesting. I liked that the tour was self-guided yet there seemed to be very knowledgeable guides anytime we needed one. You are touring a real ice breaker so the stairs up and down are steep and narrow. Great views of the Mackinaw Bridge on deck too.

“Great tour for a ship buff”
Reviewed July 30, 2014

This was a fun tour. There were a number of video presentations explaining aspects of the ship and the volunteer docents the day I was there were exceptionally knowledgeable. The tour is self guided and you can take as much time as you want. As an added bonus, the ship is docked next to the old railhead used in years past by the Chief Wawatam railroad ferry, which I had seen in many an old lake photo.

“Awesome ship, excellent tour!”
Reviewed July 27, 2014

This is an incredible us coast guard ship that was decommissioned in 1975. The tour takes about 45 min to an hour. It's well worth the money! Staff on board is very friendly and knowledgeable. It's an incredible ship! Let's you appreciate our coast guard and the way they live when on the ship!
