We decided to stay at the Starlite because we had found a coupon online. I called and mentioned the coupon when I booked the 2 double bed, smoking room about 6 weeks before our arrival. When I called one week before arrival to confirm our reservation, I was told it had been put on hold because they couldn't honor the coupon that weekend. I was very upset that they didn't call me to tell me this. If I would not have called to confirm our reservation, we could have been left without a room. When I mentioned this, the woman on the other end of the phone agreed someone should have called, but didn't apologize. Instead of searching for another room at the last minute, we decided to go ahead and pay the higher rate (which was still reasonable compared to the hotels along the lake).
When we arrived they allowed us to check-in before noon, which was nice. The room was dated but clean and spacious. We had requested a smoking room but they told us they didn't have smoking rooms available (all doors had no smoking signs on them) but if we must would could smoke in our room. Each room had one chair and sidetable outside the door so we smoked outside. Again, it would have been nice if they had been honest when we booked the room and told us it was a non-smoking motel.
The hot tub and pool were very nice and clean. The hot tub was indoors and the temperature seemed just right without too many chemicals. The pool was outside and was very refreshing. They had a small arcade room with some $.25 video games, a swingset and sandy area for the kids and a couple swings for the adults. We really enjoyed these amenities.
The toilet didn't seem to flush properly, so we called the front desk to report the problem. She said she would have someone come to look at it. About 3 hours later someone came saying he was looking for a plunger. We told him we didn't need it fixed anymore since we found if you hold the handle down for a long time it will eventually get enough suction to work.
The beds were very hard so I din't sleep very well (but that is based on personal preference). The shower pulsed between hot and cold blasts of water and the tub drained verrrryyy slow. The free continental breakfest consisted of mini muffins, toast and cereal available 8am - 10am. It was a challenge carrying food back to the room since trays or plates were not provide, only napkins. There wasn't anyplace to eat in the lobby where the breakfast was located so you either had to take it back to the room or eat outside on a picnic table or swing.
The Starlite is very close to town and the lake. It was on a little side street so pulling out into traffic was very easy. We went to the Macinaw Crossing to see the laser show. We really enjoyed the evening strolling around the shops and taking in the lively show. If you get a chance, definately try the whitefish at Scalawag's Whitefish. Great food!
All things considered, we will most likely look for somewhere else to stay next time we visit the area.
