1-night midweek stay Oct 2010. Picked Baymont Inn based on other good reviews. Hoping for a clean basic hotel with a pool and free breakfast. Our stay was great.
Beds were firm. Not super-fancy, but they did the job. Room was very clean, mechanically everything appeared in good working order(did not use HVAC due to moderate temperatures).
Common areas and the overall hotel grounds were attractive and updated. There is a small but welcome lobby / sitting area with a couple comfortable chairs in addition to the dining area for the breakfast room. Many hotels in this star rating / price range seem to offer less of a lobby.
Pool area was nice, including hot tub. Room was very warm -- sometimes, cold pool water and/or air temp makes for unpleasant swimming for little kids. Not a problem here! Workout room inside pool area looked very basic but seemed to be locked before advertised pool hours were open. Included 1 True brand treadmill and 1 elliptical. Did not use equipment.
Free breakfast was good, as long as you are not expecting high-end gourmet food. Make-your-own waffle station worked well. Also pre-made french toast with instructions how to microwave (we didn't try these but seemed like a nice addition to the normal continental breakfast fare). Hard-boiled eggs, bananas, apples, danish/muffins (from Gordon Food Service; they were adequate), orange and apple juice, cereal, yogurt, toast, etc. Breakfast was open until 10am, which seemed longer than most hotel breakfast hours.
Staff was a highlight of the stay. Everyone was professional, friendly, helpful. Exactly the kind of people who you'd hope to be served by -- whether in a hotel, a restaurant, retail store, etc. Assistant mgr / desk clerk gentleman was very helpful during breakfast, aggressively keeping stations stocked with food supplies. Housekeepers were really friendly, asking us if we had left a jacket in the lobby. General manager gave us directions and advice on a thrift shop in St. Ignace. She also told us we could leave our vehicle here and pick it up the next day -- we were deciding whether to park it at the ferry company's lot while we stayed the following night on Mackinac Island. Overall, people just seemed to enjoy doing their jobs and it was great to see. The hotel had a 'Best of Baymont' award displayed on the wall, and it is easy to see why.
This was a very good stay at a budget hotel. The price we paid ($58+ tax) was lower than some of the traditionally higher-rep hotel brand names (e.g. Holiday Inn Express) and I'm confident we were in a nicer, more updated property.
High speed internet worked without a hitch.
We would definitely stay here again.
