Attraction details
Owner description: Emmet County owns the historic McGulpin Point Lighthouse, which protected shipping on the Straits of Mackinac against storms, fog and rocks between 1869 and 1906. It was purchased by the county in 2008, which reopened McGulpin to the public with a gala celebration on May 30, 2009. The site is approximately 10 acres and is a half mile north of the Headlands. It includes 336 feet of shoreline on the Straits with a commanding view of the Mackinac Bridge. Trail to the Straits includes new interpretive signage coming in Summer 2015! Beautifully maintained grounds and interior. There is always something new at McGulpin Point!

“Great Lighthouse to visit.”
Reviewed October 13, 2012

We have visited and photographed many lighthouses, and this is one of the best. It's just recently been opened to the public and is worth a visit. It is just West of the Mackinaw City area and many other historic lights of that region. it appears to be a work-in-progress, as a few of the upper rooms are still being developed. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Views from the tower are some of the best we have seen. Viewing the Straits and Mac Bridge from the trail and McGulpin Point Rock is amazing...really beautiful. Highly recommended!

“Nice piece of history.”
Reviewed October 2, 2012

We were able to tour this lighthouse. They are resoring the building as it was used as a private residence for a while. The view from the tower was amazing. There is no charge to visit here. They do have a donation jar out. The workers there were very friendly and let us know about the history there.

“Great start.”

Emmet County acquired the property and has opened it up as a museum. Worth stopping by to see. Will be interesting to see how they develop it over the next few years.

“Drive a little to find this gem”
Reviewed September 28, 2012

Our hotel manager suggested McGulpin Point as a great place to take sunset pictures of the Mackinaw Bridge and - surprise - we found this great lighthouse too! It's not in town but the drive is easy. No charge, but donations help preserve this piece of history. We climbed the stairs to the top and got lucky with a sunset picture of the bridge including a rainbow.

If you are looking for a prime spot to shoot those vacation photos that make others gasp at the beauty of where you were, this is the spot. Don't miss it. Climb the tower and make the trip to the lakes edge. You won't be sorry!
