Mackinaw Beach and Bay - Inn & Suites
Ranked #9 of 40 Hotels in Mackinaw City
Reviewed August 11, 2014

Unfortunately, if we and a lot of other people recommend the Mackinaw Beach and Bay ,maybe it won't have openings when we want to go back......But we were so pleased with this place and we want to thank the staff for their hard work and kindness, so we will let others know about it :).
We had a very clean room which was actually like 2 rooms..... a queen bed and sofa bed in one section and a king sized bed in the other section of the room. Each room included a TV (with cable), one with a DVD player. In between the rooms was a little hallway with the bathroom on one side and across from the bathroom were an additional sink, counter space, mini microwave, and dorm-size refrigerator . The beds were very comfortable (although we didn't try the sofa bed) and the air conditioning with digital controls kept the temperature in both rooms very comfortable. We enjoyed the view and sounds of the waves on the shore from the balcony. The large window by the balcony could also be opened to enjoy the cool night air. We purchased ferry tickets for a discount at the front desk. (We still had to pick up the bike tickets at the dock, though. ) The front desk staff were extremely helpful.
There's a nice lobby by the front desk if people want to relax outside of their rooms.
The pool didn't have a strong chlorine smell when we were there (as one reviewer mentioned.)
The whole building was in very good condition except for a hole in the ceiling tile above the shower. We would not recommend going on the beach unless you had 'water shoes' or other washable footwear....as other reviewers have said, there are a lot of bird droppings because there were a lot of seagulls.
We hope to return to this hotel when we have the opportunity to get back to Mackinaw City.

This July, we stayed for 1 week at this resort. This is the fourth straight year we have stayed at this hotel (it opened around 2010). My family has made Mackinaw City a family trip for more than 35 years. I have stayed at many hotels and campgrounds in the area. Last year, there was new ownership. The rooms are very large and with a King bed, Queen bed, and sleeper sofa, the rooms can easily sleep at least 6 people. The room is very clean and it seemed we were always able to get maid service before noon which is great for a family with a toddler who needs a nap. The King bed is set off with a partition (not a separate room) from the Queen bed and sofa. From the King bed you get a nice lakeview. From the King bed area, you can go out on the balcony. From the balcony, you get great views of teh lake, island, and the bridge (Most hotels in Mackinaw City that have lake view rooms face East, so you cannot see the bridge from the balcony. For the room size and the cleanliness this hotel is a GREAT value compare to other hotels and is our #1 choice.

Room Tip: We liked the first floor because of no elevators, but did have a chipmunk come into the room when we...

The hotel is in a nice location close to the ferry and town. It was clean and the suite room was very large and comfortable. Fridge and microwave in room were great. This made travel with teenagers much nicer. The breakfast was very good with waffles, fruit, eggs and a nice variety. The building is very odd and closed in...no windows in the breakfast room. The indoor pool reeks of chlorine. The beach is nasty and controlled by birds. But we enjoyed our stay... a good value and a nice room.

We arrived in Mackinaw City on a Thursday evening and had reservations for the King and Queen room. While the room was compact, it was adequate for my wife and I and our 4 children-3 of whom are adults. My son did complain about the queen sofa bed, but the others were very comfortable and the rooms were very quiet. The view from the balcony was great as we sat for several hours watching the ferries and other boats. We were able to get discounted tickets for Sheppler's Ferries in the lobby, saving $5 each. The breakfast had eggs, sausage, biscuits and gravy etc., but was very busy and difficult to find seating in. (We knew it was going to be very busy in Mackinaw city on the first weekend in August.) The pool was average size, consisting of a small waterfall and hot tub. They did offer complimentary wrist bands to a nearby hotel which had an indoor water park but we did not take advantage of that. Overall a very enjoyable experience.

We had a room(s) with a King and queen. It was actually two separate rooms separated by the bathroom. It was very nice, roomy, and clean. The balcony provided a great view of the bridge and Mackinac island. The beach is not good. Some sand back from the water and lots of seagulls and their droppings. The staff was very nice and helpful. Hot breakfast was the same everyday but good. Nice quiet location but close to everything. I would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: We stayed on the second floor and it was fine.

I understand what people are saying about the staff. They can seem rude but if you are nice and don't give them attitude they won't give it back. I saw and heard so many people being rude to them. If I had to listen to that all the time I would be crabby too!
We were in the extra large suite room 318. Not the best view of the bridge. Had to go all the way to one side and lean over railing to see it but I wasn't too bummed. The beach is non-existent. They do a lot of photo editing to make it look like it has a white sandy beach:) what sand there is, is covered in goose crap. So it's a swampy litter box:/
The room was fairly decent and clean. The hallways were very clean. The lobby was impressive. The pool is a hike from the rooms, Very oddly placed. The breakfast is we ate there both mornings.

Pros: Fantastic room layout for families (our son was happy to have his own room and TV); quiet location away from the busy downtown area; close to 2 of the 3 ferries; helpful staff; clean rooms and spacious bathroom

Cons: no division/partition between the two bedrooms (a curtain or door would have been nice); breakfast was just okay - some more fruit options and yogurt would have been nice.

Good stay - we recommend this hotel!

Room Tip: The hotel has only 4 floors - ask for a room on the 4th floor.
