Description: For 37 years, Cawthorne's Village Inn has been a favorite Mackinac Island destination of locals and tourists alike. In fact, it has consistently been voted one of northern Michigans best restaurants! A half block off Main Street, on Hoban Street and straight up from Shepler's Ferry Dock, sits “the VI,” where summer visitors can dine on the outdoor patio and watch a passing parade of horses, carriages, bikes and walkers. Originally opened as the Village Inn in 1981, diners enter below a hanging sign announcing its house specialty, Planked Whitefish, which has garnered international acclaim. We also feature other Great Lakes fish, fresh from waters in and near the straits of Mackinac. Inside, enjoy your favorite sporting event on the indoor televisions and take your chance at Keno and pull tabs. You can also enjoy live musical entertainment on select evenings and seasonal bar specials.

Came in to the inn on a vacation date with my girlfriend, and was welcomed by the most welcoming individual, Scott the bartender, who talked us into sitting at his bar for dinner and assured us excellent service! We obliged and he was right! From apps to entrees he took excellent care of us and we, of course, tipped a well deserved 50%! What a great time! Suggested apps calamari and for entrees planked whitefish and the steak kabobs!! Ask for Scott!

Off the main street is this gem of a restaurant. Sit on the patio if the weather allows. Don't miss the kale-bulgar salad with manchego cheese, Dijon vinaigrette, and dried cherries. Service is excellent. The VI is definitely one of Mackinac's best!

We go to Mackinac Island year every year and the Village Inn was one of our favorite restaurants. When we returned the last time, we were surprised to learn that it had been taken over by the Grand Hotel. Not only was the service slow and the food mediocre at best, but they had removed their signature appetizer- the baked whitefish dip- from the menu. We were incredibly disappointed and needless to say, will not be returning.

We are very sorry to hear that your dining experience wasn't up to par. Grand Hotel did take over the Village Inn and we are just finishing our second season. We pride ourselves on Great Service and Great Food and to hear that you were not pleased is unacceptable to our high standards. The "Signature" dish of the Village Inn was and has always been the "Cedar Planked Whitefish" and that item still holds as our "Signature Dish." It is by far the most popular and most sold item on our menu. As for the Baked Whitefish Dip, we did not take it off the menu. We still have a Great whitefish dip on our menu. The only difference is that it is not Baked, it is a cold dip served with Brown Bread. The feedback we got from our guests was that the warm fish dip was not as appetizing as the cold fish dip. We do hope that you will return and give us another chance as a dining option in the future.

We had lunch at the Village Inn. Being owned by "The Grand" we weren't sure what to expect. We sat on the outdoor patio and had a nice view. We both had sandwiches (spicy chicken and walleye). The food was good, but it was pricey. The service was slow. We had to wait a while for the waiter to come out to us for drink refills and the check. If we go back, it would be to try the "best bloody mary" on the island.

We elected to dine here as the cedar planked whitefish had received great reviews. We were sorely disappointed.
The fish was over-cooked and well past its best. Mr L's New York strip was cooked perfectly but was accompanied by stone cold mashed potatoes. Our server did not even check to see of our food was alright.
Once we got the attention of someone, to rectify the issue of the cold potatoes, it was taken away to be reheated. Upon the return of the plate, the steak was over cooked and the mash had gone from stone cold to tepid.
Once again, no one came to check the "revamped" food was alright.
To sum up: Unattentive service, disorganised kitchen & not the freshest fish. Must try harder.
