Owner description: This is Mackinac Island State Park, a landscape characterized by high limestone bluffs, beautiful vistas of sparkling water, vibrant forests, and mystical geological formations. With automobiles banned since 1898, here exists a quieter way of life away from interstate noise of cities. Over 80 percent of Mackinac Island is within Mackinac Island State Park—free of charge and open year round—where you’ll discover the true natural gems of Mackinac. Whether visiting this island parkland by foot, bike, horseback, or carriage, these many majestic geological wonders and unique historical monuments are visual treasures found only here—on the island sacred to the Ojibwa and Odawa Great Lakes Indian tribes. According to them, this is where life began. You’re invited to discover why.

“Mackinac Island Park”
Reviewed October 11, 2013

My husband and I just got back from the most beautiful walk around Mackinac Island. Yes we walked around the water edge (8.2) miles and it is too magnificent to put in word it is something you must do yourself. We also the next day walked around the top following the map guide the park hands out it is easy to read and follow. We found so many interesting things and places.
We go every year and never tire of it and always find different things to do.

Ran the entire island 8 miles around. Next day rented hiking bikes and road all around the park. So beautiful.

“Visit Mackinac Island”
Reviewed October 9, 2013

Visiting Macinac Island is like stepping back in time, from the moment you step off of the ferry.
It's in the scenery, the atmoshere, and the smell of the horses! Take bikes around the island, an easy ride, or take a horse & buggy. Wonderful hotels and inns, and plenty of great restaurants and shopping. The best way to visit is to spend at least one night on the island to fully experience it. and don't forget to get some fudge...

“Wanted to see the cannon fired since I was a kid”
Reviewed October 7, 2013

Very interesting historical restoration. Cool interactive stuff for kids. Loved the cannon firing. Spent at least an hour wandering and enjoyed it very much. Also, great views of Straights of Mackinac as well as the downtown area of the Island.

“no expensive gasoline here.”

took the shepler ferry to mackinaw island to stay at the grand hotel. shepler ferry company is very organized. left our luggage with them and saw it again in our room at the grand. valet is the way to go.
no cars to look out for just horses, buggies and bikes. don't worry they clean up after the horses all the time. not much smell, after all there are a lot of horses there, about 600. it's unique.
if you have four people in your group forget the large commercial carriage rides. they are $24.50 per person, people are packed on them. you get a much more personal tour if you go down to the park and book your own carriage. some carriage companies charge $100 for four people for an hour. some charge $120. just ask for the price. you can even drive your own carriage if you like. the horses know the way. we had a young driver that has always lived on the island. you can really learn a lot about life on the island from a local. we asked our driver to drop us off at the grand hotel at the end. saved us the walk up the hill.
lots of bicycle rentals too. but not for me.
