Owner description: This is Mackinac Island State Park, a landscape characterized by high limestone bluffs, beautiful vistas of sparkling water, vibrant forests, and mystical geological formations. With automobiles banned since 1898, here exists a quieter way of life away from interstate noise of cities. Over 80 percent of Mackinac Island is within Mackinac Island State Park—free of charge and open year round—where you’ll discover the true natural gems of Mackinac. Whether visiting this island parkland by foot, bike, horseback, or carriage, these many majestic geological wonders and unique historical monuments are visual treasures found only here—on the island sacred to the Ojibwa and Odawa Great Lakes Indian tribes. According to them, this is where life began. You’re invited to discover why.

The Island really is one great big state park. Bike and hike and then do it again at another time of day to catch the lighting changes. Come back again and again...

“A Nice Place To Visit”
Reviewed March 4, 2013

My husband, mother in-law and myself took the hydro-ferry over to the Island for the day. Of course this wasn't cheap, but it's about the only way to get there. It was a very busy place. Lots of shops, restaurants, and sites to see. We found a place off the main path that was a better deal for a carriage ride. My husband was able to drive us around so we didn't have to have a guide. We didn't stay the night on the island (way too pricey), but it is a beautiful place to visit. Honestly once you've been there why go back ?? We pretty much were able to see everything in 1 day. There are so many other places to go and visit that may not be as pricey either.

“Really a cool Island!”
Reviewed February 25, 2013

This is like a walk back in time! Love the fact there is no motorized vehicles on this Island. We took a carriage tour which was a lot of fun and very informative. The hotel is a MUST see. Take your time, arrive early and stay late. There is a lot to see.

“Mackinac Island, what a place for fun.”
Reviewed January 23, 2013

Mackinac Island is a great place to spend a day. You can take a carriage ride and see the highlights of the island or rent a bike and ride the 8 mile trail around the island. Some of the hotels are pricey but we found the Pontiac Lodge and thought it was nice for the price. The Grand Hotel has a small restaurant at the Fort Mackinac. Another way to enjoy the island without the lodging expense is to stay in Mackinaw City and then take the ferry to and from the island on the same day. There are many nice attractions near Mackinaw City and there are also nice stores. We live in Indianapolis and can get to Mackinaw City in a day. Every time I the "Michigan.org" commercials I'm ready to pack!!! Beware the state parks close in early October.
