Attraction details
Owner description: This is Mackinac Island State Park, a landscape characterized by high limestone bluffs, beautiful vistas of sparkling water, vibrant forests, and mystical geological formations. With automobiles banned since 1898, here exists a quieter way of life away from interstate noise of cities. Over 80 percent of Mackinac Island is within Mackinac Island State Park—free of charge and open year round—where you’ll discover the true natural gems of Mackinac. Whether visiting this island parkland by foot, bike, horseback, or carriage, these many majestic geological wonders and unique historical monuments are visual treasures found only here—on the island sacred to the Ojibwa and Odawa Great Lakes Indian tribes. According to them, this is where life began. You’re invited to discover why.

“Special place!”

Such a Beautiful place that is hard to leave. It's as if you were on an Island far away from mainland. One of my favorite places to be. The ride around the island never gets boring. If you love History then you will enjoy the Island even more (which I do). Take time to see all of the historical places on the Island, not just the ones on the outer edge, travel into the middle where there are many interesting places. Beautful gardens, homes, landscapes, beaches and of course views. Just LOVE IT there!! We took our friends there that fell in love with it too.

Visited the fort for the first time this October--what a treat. Simple exhibits, friendly staff, stunning views, really great experience overall.

“Bike Riding”

We rode bicycles all around the island. It's 8 miles all around and we rode through the Mackinac Island State Park. It's beautiful, especially in the fall with all the trees changing colors.

“Still a Diamond in the Rough”

There truly is something magical about Mackinaw Island, it doesn’t matter what time of the year you go but our favorite is the fall. The changing of the season brings on a color display that is breathtaking. In the fall most of the crowds of summer are not on the island but yet most all of the shops, restaurants and attractions remain open; it is like it’s your own. Admittedly it takes time to adjust to the unfamiliar serene quite of the island, void of all motor traffic noise, just the sound of the breeze, birds, and clip clop of the horse & carriages. It matters not if you are a day or over-night guest; take the time to unwind, relax and enjoy a true gem of upper Michigan.

“oh WOW”

This is a must see for kids. A little too many fudge shops, but the beauty, horses, flowers, Grand Hotel, and the bike rides are all a "hit" with kids and adults alike. There is so much history there and the bike ride around the island is a must do and a healthy family trip
