“Beautiful Inn, but far from downtown”
Reviewed March 1, 2010

Patience and time management is required when staying at the Inn at Stonecliffe. Prepare for about an hour long ride from the ferry up to the hotel, but it provides a nice tour past the Grand Hotel, the Little Stone Church, and the island interior. We were here for a family wedding and the hotel location is truly a beautiful with a fabulous view of the bridge. We stayed in the summer hour and the rooms are very nice and come with a small kitchen with fridge, etc.

However, if planning dinner or bar hopping on main street, be prepared to wait up to an hour for a cab (they are horse-drawn carriages) or an hour long walk without street lights and with "Mackinac Island apples" dotting the road.

You can rent bikes at the hotel, but they do not have enough to accommodate a full house, so we had to wait a short time before we could go with our group of 8 to downtown.

There is a fun restaurant/bar with an antique bowling alley on site, which was great for the after wedding party. Drinks were expensive though.

If you're looking for a quiet getaway, stay here. If you want to be close to the activity on Main Street, would recommend the Lilac Tree or other bed and breakfasts near town. The Grand Hotel is overpriced and needs updating.

We had only heard about Mackinac Island from friends and coming from Florida we wanted a beautiful fall wedding - and this was definately the right place! The Inn was gorgeous and the grounds were breathtaking! They catered our entire wedding and did an outstanding job from presentation to fantastic food! The only drawback was that the bathrooms did not have a sink and you had to use the same sink in the small kitchen area to brush your teeth etc. Other than that - and the long horse and buggy ride from downtown (which we believe actually added to our trip so we could see the beautiful countryside! ), it was perfect and I would recommend it to anyone!

I enjoyed staying here. The inn is beautifully decorated, has a wonderful pool and the grounds are fabulous. It is a bit off the beaten path... but, that makes it nice to break away from the hustle and bustle of the town atmosphere. Patience is a virtue... the horse carriage rides too and from are anything but fast. :) A great place to relax and enjoy the island.

The bike ride there, I thought I would never get there. Riding through the stone pillar was a great site to see. We arrived before the luggage go there which was great because it gave us some time to visit with family and see what was happening. We received all of our luggage a short time after. It was about a 15 minute bike ride( Make sure you bring your bikes) or it could of been a 45 minute walk. We booked a lakeside suite with two queen beds( it was perfect for our family). The Summer House has an elevator which was a great help. We are use to a pillow top bed. The bed wasn't that. Being over 6 foot tall the shower head was too small but perfect for the rest of family. It was nice to have breakfast onsite but was OK. The staff was great but only lost 1 of the families bag which was recovered 6 hours before the Wedding. The pool was great , especially in the early morning when no one was there. The trails around in the Inn were great. The staff was very helpful with all of our very demanding schedule and questions.

WE WILL DEFINITELY BE BACK but next time I want a south corner suite with two balconies( one facing the pool to watch family at the pool and the other facing the lake ROOM 2312).

Family & friends came from across the country for a special wedding weekend. The Inn is fine as long as you carry your own luggage from the ferry dock to the StoneCliff Inn shuttle or use a public taxi. No formal processes/procedures to match your StoneCliff luggage ticket number w/StoneCliff ticket number on your luggage. Bag porterss are not given proper training to match the tickets you hand them (or front desk receptionist) w/ the bags sent from the dock (by a StoneCliff employee) on the StoneCliff Inn shuttle. If the number of tickets is greater than the number of bags delivered you have to bring it to the attention of Inn staff. There is no process to in place to insure customers receive their bags. You are left to raise awareness of StoneCliff staff, SunSet Condos, & Police. Mgmt claims they never take possession of your luggage. Great location, very private. Worst service we experienced in over 22 years of traveling the world.

We stayed at the Inn for two nights over Labor Day weekend for a wedding. I had made reservations awhile back but had many changes in the fare due to group rates that the bride and groom had negotiated.
We brought our bikes so we just left the luggage wtih the hotel contact and biked to the hotel. It was a nice ride up the hill. Check in was smooth. We had a room in the main house overlooking the front lawn. I wish we had a bridge view but oh well. The room was fine but could use some TLC like a fresh coat of paint, but still charming and clean.
Check out was smooth.
The daily breakfast is a nice touch- lots of warm food plus danishes and cereals.

NOTE- you should take your bike if you stay here. If not, you will be waiting and paying for horse taxis often. Also, you cannot leave super early because their shuttles to the ferries don't start early.

Mackinac Island is a BEAUTIFUL island. Both times we have stayed on the island, we have stayed at Stonecliffe. A friend recommended it, because they also had a larger family, and it is very family friendly. Both times, we brought our bikes, which I highly recommend.

The Inn is quite a ways from town, and this is really the only negative. But if you have your bike, it isn't so bad. I do regret that we never took the carriage ride into town. We were deterred by the cost (for a family of 5, it was up there) -- but it would have been such a different experience.

We were with our 3 kids, ages 7, 9 and 12. They all did a great job pedaling themselves around the island, seeing the sights. It was a great family experience. The Inn at Stonecliffe has a pool, which is not very deep. It also has an incredible view of the Mackinac Bridge. And at night, if you walk a little ways, to the neighboring rental place, there's a big balcony (looks public), you can get an awesome view of the sunset.

The rooms are very nicely decorated. The beds and pillows were excellent. The place was very clean, and felt new -- no signs of wear. We had 2 bedrooms and 2 baths. The family room had a pull out sofa bed that our 12 year old slept on. The rooms have balconies. We could see pool and Mackinac bridge from ours. Some of the smaller rooms, and huge balconies.

The first night, we ate at the restaurant at Stonecliffe. The food was good, but expensive. We ate outside on the patio, and the view of their grounds, with the bridge in the background was really beautiful. The 2nd night we ate at the Woods restaurant. Food was as good as night before, and just as expensive. Great atmosphere (indoors, Bavarian, nice fire and ambience). We wanted to walk to town, eat more casual (less expensive) and take carriage back, but it was raining.

The breakfast is a big breakfast, with lots of hot options (eggs, sausage, etc.). It is a big plus for staying at the resort -- especially if you are doing a lot of biking -- get your energy early. We stayed in the 2 bedroom suite, and it has a mini-kitchen. So we brought over a cooler with food. We made lunches, so we didn't have to eat out, except for our dinners.

We stayed 2 nights, but I recommend 3 nights. I also HIGHLY recommend going to the Fort -- no matter what age you are. They do a fabulous job there -- educational, interesting (fun and interactive for the kids) and the view up there is great. The gift shop is great too :)

My 12 year olds favorite part of the island to bike on, is through the middle of the island (going from town towards British Landing). It is a long downhill ride, and he loved going fast down it. Do NOT go the opposite way (we saw many people going UP -- not fun).

When you get to British Landing, there's a stand that sells soft serve ice cream as well as fried pickles (my husband really liked these).

One of our favorite bike rides on the island, is Leslie Avenue. It is heavily wooded with lots of up and down hills. You can take it to Arch Rock, and then cut over to Garrison which turns into British Landing, which is the long downhill our preteen likes.

I recommend Stonecliffe. Just be aware of the fact you are not in town. But is is really nice and quiet. There are bats out at night. Also -- for the last 2 years, they have had a special, where if you book by December 31st, for the upcoming summer, you can get certain dates 1/2 price. We did this both years (but had to travel at the end of Augsut to do so) -- and saved a lot of money. It is a good deal though.

Stonecliffe is a wonderful place to visit if you are going to Mackinac. I highly recommend staying ON the island vs. in St. Ignace (have done this before) or Macinack City.
