“Wonderful Place to Stay”
Reviewed October 2, 2013

We were met by Rich who checked us into the B & B and escorted us to the Mackinac Suite and explained everything to us. The Mackinac Suite is very beautiful, and the house is situated just below the Fort. The Inn is very beautifully decorated and exceptionally clean. Breakfast is a baked egg dish, which was always delicious with coffee cake and fresh fruit, juices and yogurt. I think there were other things such as breads and bagels. For the days we were there we took our breakfast out to the veranda which was very pleasant. Island fudge, caramel corn, peanut brittle and salt water taffy is also put out at 3 p.m., this really hits the spot after walking or bike riding! The Cottage Inn is very convenient to the Arnold Ferry dock as it is just up the street and around the bend, so easy to get to. Both Marg and Rich were very accommodating, knowledgeable, friendly and helpful with advice. The Inn is kept sparkling clean and is very comfortable. Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay with Rich and Marg and would certainly recommend this Inn and hope to return again in the future.

Room Tip: The Mackinac Suite is very beautiful and roomy with a great view of the fort.

Mackinac Island is such a relaxing place. Staying at the Cottage Inn made it even more so! This was our first time at a B+B, we really enjoyed it! The staff was so friendly and helpful, had very good advice about what to do, where to go. Location is top notch, so close to downtown, yet not on top of all the action. We met some very nice people at breakfast and the food was very good! Our room was clean and comfortable with a huge shower! We would love to return to Mackinac Island one day and our 1st choice would certainly be the Cottage Inn. We enjoyed the weekend so much!

We were welcomed warmly by Rich and Marge after Carmen opened the door to allow us to carry or luggage in. We stayed in the Mackinac Suite the first night and found it to be large and comfortable. We had a very nice breakfast, finding the quiche to be good and the fruit to be fresh. The coffee was good. The next night we stayed in the Lilac Parlor. It was very comfortable and attractive. We actually enjoyed the water view out of the window. We will go there again.
When we asked Rich any questions, was very courteous, friendly and knowledgeable.

Room Tip: The Mackinac Suite would work well for a family.

and this was our experience at the Cottage Inn.

--Thumbnail list for innkeepers to gravitate toward perfection: Marge, watch attitude; include tips in confirmation/booking email re Arnold ferry line and short cut to inn; provide a printed (laminated) listing of the television channels; provide ESPN; and acquire some nice, firm pillows.

DETAILS: We arrived on the Arnold Line for a couple of reasons. It was the terminal most close to this B & B and, in our opinion, offered the safest car-storage option. (On the Island, the other two ferry lines have terminals several blocks further west of the Arnold Line terminal.) We did not take advantage of the luggage transfer service provided by Arnold. We packed very light staying just 48 hours on the Island plus one of the small roll-around pieces contained medical equipment we were simply unwilling to risk damaging by the hand of the luggage guys.

We walked right from the Arnold terminal on Main and then left, up the hill on Fort to Market. The Cottage Inn was about four properties left of the corner of Fort and Market. It was not arduous for us as we walk and hike. Plus, we haul most if not all same baggage through Chicago’s O’Hare and Atlanta’s Hartzfield Jackson airports frequently! (If you do not know how to pack for second or third story lodging without elevators, see my tip later.) Turns out, however THERE IS AN EASIER path from Arnold to Cottage Inn. (Not quite a hill as Fort Street is.) See below.

As luggage storage was available per confirmation email received, we entered the Cottage Inn before lunch time. We found Marge behind the desk. She greeted us and suggested Mackinac Island Carriage Tour (three horse drawn tram) carrying one to perhaps 20 persons, so that we could quickly acquaint ourselves with the lower Island tourist points. We read many reviews on this website and decided long before we arrived to avoid this company. Check out the reviews yourself about carriage tours. (See tip below.)

I responded that we did not want that company but instead planned to seek out one of the other carriage companies that may presently be found at Fort and Main on the northeast corner across from Visitor’s Center. Marge seemed deeply offended with my rejection of the MICT! (Like she owned stock in Mackinac Island Carriage Tour biz!) (I must learn to somehow overcome the tendency in my personality to reveal to people exactly what is on my mind! I should have just nodded to Marge at her suggestion to use the inferior carriage line!)

For some reason she asked what ferry line we used and how we got over to the Inn. We supplied the information, and she remarked, “Oh, you took the long way around! There’s a walkway right across the street from the Arnold terminal.”

Now, I ask you, wouldn’t it be nice to include this information about the walkway, if not use of Arnold, in the confirmation email?

Some bed and breakfasts provide detailed information respecting directions, parking suggestions, general hints, and dining suggestions. Then there’s this B & B!

So here we stand in the first room inside the front door (bkfst room in the a.m.) being told, basically, how stupid we are for dragging our baggage the long way!

And if this was not enough, stay tuned. Marge told us “We’ll take care of your luggage.” So I decided to move the bags and backpack over to the side of the room from the spot basically in the path from the front door to the stairs to the rooms. I wanted to be polite. I began to place the items to the side of the room and in an orderly manner given the smallness of the room.

Marge then ridiculed me for not taking her at her word and for being overtly (perhaps obsessively) organized.

The balance of our stay on this day, the full day the next, and the morning of the third day, she assiduously avoided us in “body” and eye-contact. She could not have made us happier!

(Turns out, Rich, the innkeeper host was most engaging and pleasant to deal with. Perhaps it is Rich that keeps people coming back or providing nice reviews on this site.)

As for the room: We had AC and this was nice. We had some form of cable/satellite television. Channel 15 scrolls the choices, but it seemed to take forever for the scroll to complete its cycle and for us to learn the choices.

Advice to innkeepers: make it MUCH more pleasant, print out the listing so at a glance guests may see where CBS or ESPN are.

Wait! ESPN is NOT ON THE CABLE/SATELLITE MENU!!!! There goes major league baseball in the summer and Monday night football in September and thereafter. What is up with this? After a long day bicycling or poking around the Island and dinner, it would be nice to settle in with ESPN.

The bed was great. Firm, yet with a pillow top. The pillows were not great. Attention needs to be paid to getting some nice firm pillows to mix up with the whole group of soft ones.

Service and food: It was very nice that someone (Rich?) carried our baggage to our room. It may be that they also did not have adequate space to store until check in. The breakfast area is tiny.

First breakfast featured a great cake with flavorful swirl inside, along with a tasty egg casserole. Cereal, various juices, yogurt, and other items were, with the two main dishes, available in a buffet format. Second day’s fare included all the ancillary items along with a somewhat bland bread but a delicious egg casserole with what I believe was cream cheese.

“Poor” rating supplied here not only to alert fellow travelers regarding the negative elements of Cottage Inn, but, perhaps, to nudge the innkeepers to seek remedies to the negative items. As you may note there were some excellent and very good items per this review. (It is so hard to evaluate any activity, restaurant, or lodging with a SINGLE rating when there are wonderful, average, and disastrous elements in the whole experience!)

We ate at Chianti, Seabiscuit Café, the Grand Hotel (lunch), and Sander’s (fudge and ice cream) while on MI. See separate reviews re these. Also, bikes rented at unit on Main right at the Arnold terminal.

Room Tip: It did not take us longer than one, perhaps, two times hauling large suitcases up one or two flights...

My husband and I have been visiting Mackinac Island for 40 years and feel this B&B was the best on the island for several reasons: price, service, location, and hosts. Our breakfasts were plentiful and delicious, made by a former Home Ec. teacher we learned, who gladly shared her recipes. 3:00 treats of Island favorites were a nice touch and coffee was available all day. The hosts were on-site, friendly, and knowledgeable about the island and its history. Location is one block from Main Street with its shops and restaurants and Rich, our host, was full of suggestions and discounts around town. They had a great DVD collection and our time there was very pleasant. It was not full of antiques, but rather with new, comfy over-stuffed furniture and a pleasant eating areas inside and on the porch. We are recommending The Cottage Inn to our friends and hope to return there soon. Thank you, Marge and Rich, for an anniversary memory.

Room Tip: We like fresh air and Rich helped with opening the window 'high and wide' for us. It was qu...

We stayed in the Mackinac Suite on the third floor which worked well for our family of four since the couch is a pull-out. It was nice and private, a good spaced suite and the air conditioning in July was awesome (we were there in July 2011 but TA isn't giving me that month as an option to select from). The breakfast served was always good and the daily sweet treats the owners placed out was a welcome taste after exploring the island.

When my eldest bent his bike tire rim after an accident with an elderly island resident (yes, she was okay but we did get to see the only ambulance on the island!) the owners were very helpful in recommending which bike shop to go to for the repair.

Our only problem was the lack of security. A nice touch would be key fobs that would open the door or allow access to the various rooms and floors. There was some drunk guy that made his way into the Inn during the wee hours of the night one night and he climbed the stairs all the way to our room and was banging on our door thinking he was in the right place. In addition, he'd smeared feces on the wall of the stairwell (which we brought to the owner's attention and they took care of). Paying as much as you do to stay a night that kind of problem could be (and should've been) avoided.

But other than that, we really enjoyed our room, the service, the beds, the food and the sounds of the horses clip-clopping past us down on the street.
