Our stay at The Island House was okay. We stayed early this May not long after the hotel opened for the season so I'm sure some bugs needed to be worked out. The room was nice, the view of the lake from our room was beautiful. We were celebrating our anniversary and they had our names on the hotel lobby bulletin announcing it which was very thoughtful. The Friday night Managers Welcome Reception was pretty good with assorted cheeses, fruits and great brushetta, along with your choice of beer, wine, or soft drinks. We had dinner at the 1852 Grill Room, which is the main restaurant at the hotel. Dinner was average, however, their breakfast buffet each morning was fabulous. Service was always good and everyone we encountered was friendly. Our only problem, and it wasn't really a problem, it was more a temporary annoyance. There are many elementary school groups that visit the Island weekends during May and into the first week of June before the tourist season really takes off. We found this out after we had arrived. Our room was right next to the stairway and there must have been 50 or more kids there. In the evening they were up and down the stairs constantly running and yelling. I have children and I know kids will be kids and it's exciting to them to stay at a hotel. But we thought they (hotel) could have tried to control it better, or at least geographically arranged their guests in the hotel a little better. It stopped at about 11 p.m. so we still ended up with a restful night. Had it not stoppd by then we were going to request a move. We stayed for two nights and we only had this problem the first night. Overall we had a lovely time. The Island was beautiful. We cannot wait to return to Mackinac Island.

We stayed here over Labor Day weekend and booked a traditional 4th floor room, which required an elevator ride up to the third floor and a a flight of stairs up to the forth, which was not a problem for us. In fact, we felt like we must have stayed at the cutest room in the hotel, very cosy with the flowery decor and the additional tiny round turret room where we would sit and eat fudge while looking out over the water. Very romantic....in fact, perhaps a little TOO romantic - we are expecting our first baby at the end of May (now THAT's a souvenir!!!) :)

The decor out in the halls felt just a little worn, but to us this just added to the charm; this is, after all, a historical old hotel. It was very pleasant dining down in the 1852 Grill room for breakfast and for the one dinner we had included in our package. Food was nice and the staff were extremely curteous. During one warm evening the staff served us food and drinks out on the porch, which was one of our favourite places to be, sitting out on the rocking chairs looking over the water and sipping wine. So relaxing.

Walking around the island we checked out some of the other hotels and felt very pleased that we had chosen the Island House. The old world charm gives the perfect experience of Mackinac Island and is just a little more out of the way from the bustle of Main Street, while still being very accessible, a perfect location.

Can't wait to visit again (next time with our Island House baby!!!)

We knew when we booked the Island House hotel that it was one of the older hotels on the island. We were delighted when we arrived to find the historic marker out in front of the hotel. It was a really charming place. The front porch and chairs out on the front lawn were a great place to sit, relax, and soak in the view--even in chillier weather. We were in one of the 4th floor rooms and as we had gotten a very good off season rate, I didn't expect too much but was pleased. It was not a huge room but it did have a king sized bed and best of all, a really nice view. As the room is on one of the hotel's wings, there was a view of the front of the hotel itself, as well as the main street of Mackinac Island and the lake and islands beyond. There was a small sofa just under the window to sit and look out. I had read other reviews here and some felt that the hotel was overpriced for what they got. This might be true during the high season --I"m not sure--but we felt that with the rate we got, the hotel was a very good value. The staff was friendly and accomodating.

This hotel was wonderful. We stayed for a week and had no complaints. The room was small, but with all the stuff to do on the Island we were in there only at night. The resturant in the hotel was amazing, we both had steak and the food was excellent. The hotel is the perfect location, close enough to the downtown area, that you can walk down a couple times a day.

I would recommend the Island House to anyone and look forward to returning next fall.

We travel a lot for work and wanted to get away for a short vacation, The Island House was a perfect getaway. The staff was excellent and accomodated us changing upon arrival to the island way before check in so we could go hiking around. The room was not very large but just enough for the king bed and dresser. Knowing it was the oldest hotel on the island, I knew the quarters would be cozy.
We were pleasantly surprised with the nice breakfast and the view from the dining room. We did not spend our days there, but it was so close to the dock and the town we were able to run back and get a change of shoes or a rest on the porch. The location was the best part. The view was great and I loved not having to tote my bags down the street to the ferry as well.
We plan on coming back and have reccommended it to our friends. Very true to the times of the island.

We stayed at The Island House Labor Day, 2006 and were thrilled. For a fraction of the price of the "big name" hotel on the Island we found the facilities superb and the staff extremely accomodating.

The porch (they call it the veranda) is not as huge and famous as the one at the "big name" hotel but sitting there and watching the traffic down on the street and the marina is unforgettable.

This year we were there the same day and in the same rooms. We found the staff just a bit less enthusiastic (adequate would be a better description.) The television reception was non-existant. We were told they were working on it. There were spiders and webs all over my friends room (my room was spared.) We were told that there were spiders everywhere on the island this year. No apologies for either situation.

Buffet breakfast was adequate. (I get better variety and quality at Old Country Buffet at home, though.) We did not have other meals at the hotel. We like the Yankee Rebel downtown much better.

But attention to little details is one of the things that can make or break a stay. My little annoyance was that I paid by check in advance. Long story but it turns out that I overpaid. By about double. I was told on the telephone that the overpayment would be paid on arrival. On arrival I was told that the payment would be given to me on check out. On check out I was told it would be mailed. It took over two weeks. That's not a big deal but surely an indication of where customer satisfaction rates on their scale.

It is a good hotel and we like it and will probably return. But nothing is consistant and surely nothing is perfect.

My husband and I rented a regular double room for three nights on second floor facing the front/lake. The room size was too small for the price paid and there was a bit more noise from the hallway than I expected. The hotel needs a bit of sprucing up--some stains and cracks in the tub and sink. Our king bed was very comfortable, but really too large for the room. We didn't have a bureau to unpack our large suitcases into, so relied on the luggage rack. Had to ask for a second one, which was promptly provided. Unfortunately there is marina construction with motorized equipment happening in front of the hotel right now. This will last most likely until the snow flies. You can see a crane in one of the pictures I submitted. The indoor pool, sauna and whirpool were very nice, but you had to walk outside to get to them. The breakfast provided with the room price was okay, nothing special. However, their coffee was very good I thought. Their restaurant dinner menu was too expensive so we didn't try it out.

Beautiful flowers and exterior. Their staff are constantly dusting and sweeping outdoors, etc. Porch is very pleasant to rest and we enjoyed the front lawn chairs when the construction wasn't going or when it was sunny. They rent bikes there if you need it but we brought ours.

I still think this is an above average bed and breakfast location even with the construction activities. Please call them to see if it is still underway or completed before booking just so you aren't surprised.

No wireless in the rooms, must go down to the lobby or porch to use it. It is free once you get their password.
