My wife and I needed a getaway for our anniversary. Just coming back from a vacation in the United Kingdom, we weren't looking to spend a ton.

Mackinac Island was perfect. The Island House Hotel was a great place to stay. The bed was very comfortable, and the hotel ambiance was exactly what we were looking for in a romantic getaway. They even had a sign up for our stay that said Happy 3rd Anniversary with our names. It was a really great touch, and my wife really enjoyed that. The grounds of the hotel were beautiful, with a perfect view of Lake Huron. The Island House is perfectly located on Main St. just down and to the right of where the ferry drops you off.

Since they do not allow motorized vehicles on the island, I do recommend renting your bikes from the hotel, as you get a discount. Also, if you are going for your anniversary, ask for discounts everywhere, because you will get them! All of the shops slashed prices because of our special weekend.

The hotel was built in the late 1800's, and the history there is amazing. You feel like you are back in that time and that is what Mackinac Island is all about. One thing that you have to do is to spend an evening drinking wine on the enormous balcony overlooking the lake and marina, and just listen to the bikes and horse-led carriages pass by. The relaxing atmosphere was exactly what we were looking for.

Room Tip: Choose rooms facing the lake. The view is amazing.

Clean, comfortable, gorgeous rooms, some with a view (our had an excellent view), heavenly breakfast, everyone was kind and went out of their way to make our stay special. Met wonderful people during our visit while rocking on the front porch in the early morning with a cup of coffee. Dinner at the 1852 Grill Room will put a smile on your face. You won't believe it. I've stayed many nice places, this is one of my all time favorites! It's THE PLACE to stay on the island! Close to shops, bike rental, the water, restaurants and now even a Starbuck's!

Room Tip: Get the nicest room you can afford. The water view rooms are truly worth the money. You can see more...

Spent two nights here in late September under a great deal I found on the internet. Rate included round trip ferry, a breakfast, and a dinner. Had two really good meals in the 1852 Grille, with superior service by Omar--from Jamaica. Two lunch salads in the Ice House were also above average, as were the buffet breakfasts. All staff were personable and helpful. Was put in one of the 4th floor dormer rooms, which was expected because of the rate. The dormer cellings were a minor inconvenience and caused no special problems. The decor was up to date and well maintained. We enjoyed touring the island by foot, by bicycle, and
by carriage. Island House is somewhat outside the traffic on the maindrag, which is good. But
is also close enough for an easy stroll to the concentrated shops, etc.

We paid $363 for a TravelZoo package of a two night Sunday and Monday night stay in September - this included tax and prepaid gratuities, one breakfast and one dinner (we ate at the 852 Grille), round trip ferry tickets, and 1/2 pound Ryba's Fudge. Our room was on the 4th floor; an elevator will take you to the 3rd floor or you can take the stairs all the way. The hotel is old - historic is the word the staff used when I phoned to inquire how to get the light and tv to work...(turn the switch on the wall by the door)...The room was small but adequate for two people. A small couch with a tv directly above it adds a nice touch to the room, but the tv's reception was not good at all. I especially liked the front porch chairs for relaxing, and the adirondack chairs on the lawn for sitting around the fire in the chimenea - priceless. We didn't use the pool, sauna, or hot tub but they looked clean. The hotel also offers free internet inside their lobby for guests.

The hotel has good priced deals on their website too - many include breakfast. Definitely a place to consider staying on the island - it's only a half block from the touristy downtown with beautiful views from the front porch or lawn.

Everyone was very friendly from the wait staff in the resteraunts to the front desk to the housekeeping staff. The room (on the 4th floor) was comfortable and cozy too. One of the best things about the Island House is its central location...close to downtown but still quiet and relaxing. Add to it the fact that you can rent a bike on pemises and you've got access to everything!

This was our first stay on Mackinac Island, we purchased our package through Travelzoo. The hotel staff was pleasant and the main lobby was clean. The hotel was not busy however we were placed in a corner room that over looked the area where the horses came to pick up/drop off garbage and luggage. The walls are very thin...we could hear the horseshoes as they turned from the road until the carriages stopped right next to our window. This did only go on during the day but it was an annoyance. The room was very small and the bathroom was clean but there were quite a few cobwebs on the ceiling. For the price we paid it was a decent room but because of the hotel history we had higher expectations.

The hotel was very clean, very friendly, great location, good food, can't say enough. I was a bit concerned due to some of the reviews here, but I am very glad to report that we experienced absolutely nothing negative. One small peice of luggage was misplaced at the docks and the hotel took care of the problem very readily. The breakfast was very good. Excellent biscuits. Real scrambled eggs as opposed to the crap you get at other hotels included with the room. Had a wonderful dinner there too. We went up to the Grand to visit, and we had considered staying there, but I am glad we chose the Island House instead.

Room Tip: if you have special needs (ie. stairs are difficult) book directly with the hotel. They have elevat...
