“Outstanding!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 25, 2011

Stayed two nights in summer 2010 and was highly impressed. The two bedroom / two bathroom suites are spacious, comfortable, and inviting to the point that we could not wait to return after our activities. The beds were comfortable, the food was delicious, amenities were plentiful, and you cannot beat the location on the island. Will definitely visit again!

As always, the days we spent at the Island House were excellent. It's the only hotel we will stay at on Mackinac Island. The location and view are perfect. Close enough to town to be a very short walk, but far enough away that the street and sidewalks in front are not overcrowded. Our room was right in front off the covered porch, which was wonderful for having a baby with us. We could sit outside while our kids sat, read, and rested 5 feet away inside the room. They gave us a mini-fridge for our room, as we needed to keep the baby's milk cold. We forgot a cell phone charger in the car on the mainland, so the desk staff plugged our phone into their computer to charge it for us. They held our luggage on the day we left so we could access our cooler for the baby's bottles and food and change the kids' clothes when necessary. The room itself was adorable, very cute, and the bathroom was brand new and perfect. Everything was very clean, although I do wish they would buy new sheets for the beds! The complimentary breakfast was a huge plus for our families, which were staying in 2 different rooms of the hotel. And for me, the best part of the Island House are the framed letters hanging on the wall near the elevator. Many of these letters, written in thanks to the owner of the hotel, were written by my former students a few years after they were in my class, and it really makes me smile to read them!

This may have been a lovely hotel - in it's day. It seems to have gone down hill. The dining room was dingy, dark, in need of redecorating; the food was below average; the presentation of the food was shockingly poor, and the service was appalling.

We stayed at the Island House Hotel and enjoyed our stay immensely. The staff were most congenial and the restaurant served great food at supper and a breakfast buffet. The rooms were clean and adequate and the view from the front porch and grass area were stunning. Enjoy every aspect of our stay and would stay again.

This is the second time we have stayed at Island House and it is our favorite "go to" on the Island. I have spent countless hours comparing pricing and hotel "deals" and for my money, this is the best value on the island. First, this is the oldes hotel on the Island, which means the rooms are not going to be similar to a plush new hotel. But that is the charm of the Island. Even my husband - who hates old hotels - loves it. The rooms are clean and the beds are comfortable. The hotel packages typically include breakfast every morning, which is a full buffet breakfast. Breakfast elsewhere on the island will cost at least $20 for two. It also includes dinner one night in their restuarant which is one of the nicest on the island. Put that together with ferry tickets (which are included in some packages) and its location eliminating the need for taxis, and the Island House is a great deal.

The location is fantastic. It is a short stroll to the main shopping area and the ferrys. But if you have too much luggage to carry, the hotel will deliver it without additional charge. It's also an easy walk to both the Grand Hotel and Mission Point. About the only place where you need a taxi for dinner is The Woods. This is a Grand Hotel restaurant that is literally "in the woods" and you do need a taxi. Regardless, the Island House staff is great about making sure that when you do need a taxi it is there promptly.

The hotel has a vast porch with rockers and a front lawn with chairs and fire pits that is tailor made for relaxing with a book or just watching the world go by. It was chilly our last trip there and the staff kept a fire going in the hotel lobby which has a TV and table with lots of games available. It is truly a step back into time. On the "newer" side, there is an indoor pool which is great if you have kids. There are only a few hotels on the island that have pools and you will pay significantly more for those. Internet access is free, but you need to access in either the lobby or on the porch. Bike rentals are available directly in front of the hotel and across the street. Across the street is a bit more expensive, but has greater selection and will take credit cards.

The staff at Island House is very pleasant and as good as anywhere else on the island. We have never found 5 star service anywhere on the island, probably because the island shuts down after October and most of the staff is seasonal. But part of the charm of the island is its slow pace, so just relax and go with the flow.

Restaurants are expensive, regardless of where you go. But a couple of our favorties are the Island House Restaurant, the Carriage House at the Grand Hotel, and the outside grill near the golf course at Mission Point. for lunch For a truly romantic evening, take the taxi ride to The Woods (you will need reservations). Pricey but the food is good and the atmosphere wonderful.

You can access the island by private plane or by a charter flight. If you do, a couple words of warning. It can take more time than you think by taxi to your hotel as, depending on the time of day, the taxi may literally stop by the stables to change horses on the way. Also, if you are planning on having a charter flight pick you up early in the morning, give yourself plenty of time to make a commercial flight. It can be foggy in the morning and conditions may not be such that the plane can get there to pick you up until the fog lifts.

Pros: historic ambiance and feeling, walking distance to downtown, bike rental on premises
Cons: Thin walls, can hear neighbors next door and above

This was our first time staying on the island and I would have to say that we enjoyed our stay here. The maids did a fine job of keeping the room clean and staff ensured that their guests were well taken care of. Being one of the oldest hotels on the island, you can't help feeling being lost time in time. The view of the harbor was amazing and the proximity to the downtown area and Fort Mackinac could not be beat. We were close enough that we could hear the gun shots and canons going off next door at the fort! In the evening hours when the sun would go down, they had 2 outdoor fireplaces with chairs in which you could make smores and keep warm in the cool temperatures.

Supposedly the 4th floor is haunted, particularly Room 400. We read several articles about it and it was spoken about on the Ghost Tour that we went on. Kinda freaky but considering how old the hotel is, it's kinda exciting if you're into that kind of stuff. Fortunately we did not experience any paranormal activities. Take it for what it's worth. Either way, we had a great time at this hotel. We spent countless hours hanging on the their rocking chairs on the porch. Overall we enjoyed our stay here. Happy Travels!

We checked in late for the first leg of our honeymoon trip, and the staff was so accommodating. Since it was the middle of the week, they were actually able to offer us a room in the front of the house with a beautiful view of the bay, as opposed to one of the basic rear-facing rooms we were originally to stay in. The decor is simple and the bright, almost southern style patterns on the walls and linens are recurring across the island. The fine dining restaurant 1852 Grille Room was fantastic, and worth every cent. The servers were all upbeat and helpful, and contributed to a satisfying dining experience. We would love to stay at The Island House again and learn more about the history. One thing we missed out on was the s'more roasting on the front lawn, such a great idea, really confirms that you're still Up North!
