“Ride your bike to Fort Holmes”
Reviewed August 12, 2012

If you are reasonably fit, get off the island circle route and into the center of Mackinac Island State Park. Fort Holmes is the highest point on Mackinac Island and arguably has the best views. We took an adult beverage and enjoyed the views. From there we took Rifle Range Road to Arch Rock, and then rode on almost deserted Leslie Ave. Great ride and no carriges to dodge. We rode the almost 2 mile downhill road to British Landing and then stopped for a swim in Lake Huron. Not wanting to ride along the shoreline, we walked our bikes up the steep gravel Forest Driveway, just south of BL. Ride past the golf course and the airport to Stonecliffe road. Make your way to West Bluff Road, past the beautiful mansions. You can ride to the Grand Hotel, but will have to turn around to get back to town.

“Gorgeous Views, but not a lot else”
Reviewed August 8, 2012

Don't expect an epiphany of historical information to flow from a visit to the location of Fort Holmes. There are replicated parts of the fort that were built in the 1970's that shows the extremely small fort that the British put up here. The hike up the what seems like thousands of stairs is not for the faint of heart, although there are plenty of spots to rest on benches in the shade on the way up. Still, lots of stairs. Would I go up there again? Only on a warm sunny day that was not windy. It is the highest portion of the island, so the real reason to go is just for the hike and the gorgeous views -- not so much the historical aspect, although there is one. As a student of history I thought it would have been more interesting, but it was barely. Again, the view is what really impressed me on this visit.

“Outstanding view”

Fabulous view from the highest point on the island. Worth the bike ride up. Can also take a horse drawn carriage ride to this area.

“Breathtaking View”
Reviewed July 17, 2012

You are missing out on one of the most beautiful views in Michigan if you don't make the trek up to Fort Holmes. No, there is no longer an actual fort here - it's the site of a previous fort. However, it's the highest point on the island and the view is incredible!

“Not Much Here”
Reviewed July 15, 2012

The only remainder of Fort Holmes, located in the State Park, is the foundation. And it's a long climb from the road to the top of the hill. If your a real history buff, the climb might be worth it. But a tour of Fort Mackinac is a better use of your time.
