Last month we called the Grand Hotel and made a reservation for one night in September of this year (for their basic room). The price quoted for the room was a bit higher than we would have liked, but we were assured that this included dinner, all taxes, their gratuity charge for all their top-notch service since tipping isn't allowed, and transfer of luggage to the ferry. But we decided this would probably be once-in-a-lifetime, so we agreed to the price and made the reservation. My girlfriend gave her credit card number and was told she would be charged for the full price (we were surprised we would be charged in advance but agreed). Note that we didn't think we were getting a bargain or the price seemed wrong. We called, they gave us a total price that was over $500, and we agreed and made the reservation.

The next day my girlfriend received several messages from the hotel saying they needed her to call immediately. When she returned their call they stated that we were given the wrong price, and that the room would be over $100 more for the night. Worse, when she said she wasn't going to agree to this immediately and needed to talk with me first, they said if she decided to cancel after that day we would be charged a cancellation fee!!!
My girlfriend eventually convinced them to let us call them back the next day to resolve the issue.

We talked that night and called back the next day and told them we had made a reservation and expected them to honor the price that was agreed upon. They flatly said they wouldn't and we could cancel our reservation if we didn't want to pay the additional amount. So we just canceled our reservation. They were cordial about it but barely offered an apology. Hopefully nothing will be charged to our credit card.

We were extremely disappointed--especially because this was supposed to be a top-notch hotel with quality service.

I have stayed at the Grand Hotel several times and have always enjoyed the hotel very much. However, on my most recent visit to the hotel this summer I was not as impressed as I have been in the past.

Check-in: The line to check in was long and the room was not ready until 3:30pm.

Room: The room was very nice and had a view of the water. It was mostly clean except for the window screen which was covered in dead bugs.

Dining: The food has always been a highlight of staying at the Grand Hotel. Breakfast was excellent each morning. I ordered from the menu instead of the buffet and each dish was well-prepared and tasty. Dinner was not as good. For some reason, the usual menus were not used and menus with a much more limited selection were used instead. The appetizers, soups and desserts were very good and the salads were average. But the entrees were all below average. The veal the first night was overcooked and had a strange taste, the beef the second night was also overcooked, and the whitefish (usually a specialty at Mackinac) did not taste fresh at all. The side dishes were uniformly bland and uninspired - simply mashed potatoes or rice and steamed vegetables. However, the service from the Jamaican waiters was outstanding, as usual. Lunch at the Grandstand and Woods was also excellent, though expensive. It would be nice if there were a free shuttle to the Woods because it is a long walk. I had dinner at the Gatehouse one night and found the food there to be very good and the appetizers are huge!

Dress code: There were about 10 to 15 people who disregarded the requirement of wearing formal attire after 6:00pm in the public areas (they were wearing shorts, t-shirts and sandals), but no one said anything to them or made them change. There was a large number of young kids staying at the hotel, so don't expect much quiet in the parlor after dinner.

Other: Tennis courts are difficult to get reservations at and are not well maintained. They are incredibly dry clay courts and had mounds of clay in spots. Half of the courts were closed for repairs which left only 2 courts available.

Overall: A good experience but not worth the high prices that the hotel charges.

My fiance and I took his Grandma to stay at the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island in July 2006. It was the one thing she wanted to make sure she got to do in life. We had such a great time with her while we were there, and she really enjoyed being able to walk around and view the whole place, She especially enjoyed dressing up for the evening hours, and having wonderful meals in the dining area.
We are so glad that we took her last summer! This past March, she passed away very suddenly, and so we have such great memories to treasure of our trip with her to the Grand Hotel last summer, and knowing that she did all that she wanted to do in life before she passed away.
It's a beautiful hotel, with very nice entertainment. The 3 of us really enjoyed it, and I'd recommend it to anyone.

My wife and I had a delightful stay at The Grand on Mother's Day weekend. We watched "Somewhere in Time" prior to our visit to set the mood. Mother's Day weekend is the traditional opening of the island. It wasn't crowded, but some establishments were just getting up and running. The check-in was flawless and the room was larger than we expected, especially since the (main) building is 120 years young. The five-course meal was superb and the sommelier helped us pick a wonderful bottle of vino. The orchestra played during the meal; simply fabulous. The service was very attentive; their timing was just right. The grounds of this hotel are just wonderful. The view from our room was exceptional. If you stay here, keep in mind that the hotel invested millions of dollars in redesigning the interior spaces. They credit Carlton Varney, a well-known decorator, for the vibrant color scheme throughout the hotel. However, the impact of the design is bizarre; it just doesn't seem to come togther well at all. One only need to visit the Cupola Bar to witness the circus-like patterns/genre. On a positive note: the visual seizure gave us some things to laugh about. We rented a horse carriage ride from Jack's Livery. It was just awesome!

Overall, this is a great hotel with a fantastic history. It is a must see. BTW: we got a special internet rate during our stay. We saved a lot of money.

We had a wounderful time staying at the Grand hotel. The staff was freindly, our room was beautifully decorated, and the five course dinner in the evening was very good. If you enjoy luxury, then this is the hotel for you. There is no tipping at the Grand, because it is included in your price. We did not have time to have breakfast from the menu in the morning, so we chose the buffet. Our only complaint about the hotel would be that the buffet breakfast was not very warm. Everything else about the hotel was great.

To celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary, my wife and I stayed at the Grand Hotel for three nights during their Grand Opening Weekend in May, for $750. For this price we were provided a beautiful lake-view (upgraded) room next to the Presidential Suite, three huge breakfasts, three 5-course dinners, two one-hour cocktail parties with appetizers and live orchestra, a complete narrated tour of the huge kitchen, a one-hour fascinating lecture about the hotel's colorful history, a concert by the Maumee, Ohio High School Swing Choir, and live harp music daily.

The Arnold Line ferried us to Mackinac Island from Mackinaw City and transported all seven pieces of luggage from our automobile to our hotel room for only $6.50 per person. On the island, we enjoyed the horse-drawn carriage tour, lunch at Patrick Sinclair's Irish Pub and delicious fudge from Murdick's Fudge Shop. We will always have wonderful memories of our visit to the Grand Hotel and highly recommend it to everyone!

We visit beautiful Mackinac Island every year and always wanted to experience a stay at the Grand Hotel. We were in for a HUGE disappointment. We had a room (not facing the lake) which had an air conditioner. The air conditioner had a leak, and the carpeting around it was completely soaked. It was so bad we could not even step in or around that area. Besides, the room had a bad stench which was probably due to the water soaked carpet. We called the front desk and they sent someone up and put towels on the floor to soak up the water, but the air conditioner was not fixed for the duration of our stay there. They did not even offer to move us to another room. Definitely not the kind of service one would expect after paying a hefty price tag.

Also, the 9 inch TV's were a joke. So bring along some magnifying glasses if you would like to watch some of your favorite shows.

The dining hall was noisy and most of the waiters were arrogant. They were rude and impatient with our orders. We did have ONE polite waiter through our entire stay there, and he was TOP NOTCH. The dinner wasn't worth the price, considering the $75 price you pay for the meal. The portions were small and the taste was bland. The band was loud and it was next to impossible to carry on a conversation. The desserts were awesome. Breakfast was very good, but again, an arrogant waiter ruined it for us.

We did use the pool, which is outdoors. BUT, be prepared to share your swim with the local bugs.

We love visiting Mackinac Island and will continue to go there, but next time we'll stay elsewhere, in one of the many cozy bed and breakfasts the island has to offer. We will also dine in the many nice restaurants around the island, where the service is friendly and the food is worth the price you pay.

NOT GRAND AT ALL.
