We had a lovely suite that felt as if we were in a treehouse. It wasn't too much more than a regular room. While TGH reminds me of The Greenbrier because both have Dorothy Draper's signature style, due to the remote location it is not quite as luxurious as The Greenbrier.

The pool service was lacking. The grill was closed because the person who knew how to use the grill was sick? My husband had to order sandwiches from the main room and go pick them up himself? Not okay TGH for the price paid. This will deter me from returning soon.

Overall, the room, the charm, horses, and dinner in the restaurant behind the hotel made this experience enjoyable but not without glitches.

The Grand Hotel is a majestic hotel built in the horse-and-buggy era as one of America's luxury establishments for the upper class. In 2013, this late 19th century landmark is amazingly intact, well-maintained and equipped with all of the modern conveniences from wi-fi to a fitness center, strategically located on Mackinac Island where no automobiles are allowed. For our first time to visit the island over the July 4 holidays, after arriving from the mainland, we were transported from the docked ferry in a hotel "taxi", a two-horse carriage, to the main entrance of the Grand, and the view coming up the hill was beautiful. Many hotel guests use a modified American plan that provides for a sumptuous breakfast and five-course dinner, with great attention to detail. A strict dress code after 6pm may be off-putting for those who prefer cutoffs and flip flops, but a little due diligence is called for in a unique gem like this. Jackets and ties for men and dresses or upscale pantsuits for women, no exceptions. Service from the desk clerk, concierge, waiters and staff was as close to perfection as I have seen. For our five day stay, the Grand was an ideal base from which to experience all that the island offers, including riding bicycles or your own carriage for two around the island, walking down the car-free Main Street, touring Fort Mackinac and many historic museums, and sailing in the Mackinac straits with breathtaking views of the island. The fireworks display as seen from rocking chairs on the front porch of the Grand was magnificent, accented by all the oohs and ahhs of the many children in the family-friendly resort. This is easily a big 10 on a national scale of 1 to 10. Did I mention the best fudge in the world, Sadie's ice cream parlor and champagne in the Cupola?

Room Tip: Book early if you are going in the high season, request a corner room with a front view if available...

The Grand is a wonderful place , the beauty of the grounds , combined with the hotel itself took my breath away every day of my 5 day stay. The staff of many countries was friendly every day and in every encounter. The cost was well worth it when you consider feeding a family of 5 in my case, not to mention the food which was delicious, especially the dinners. The only reason i did not give it a 5 rating is as follows 1. the breakfest buffet , there were a few items that could have been improved, the waffles should be rotated so as not to dry out , this happened all breakfests, on one morn. the meat 'ham' was steamed dead, no flavor, i told the server and he said " we call that the bad ham". however there were many other things at the buffet, they were wonderful. Dinners are magical, kids tried many new dishes every day and loved them. Our room was a non view room, but it was clean and comfortable, i found the halls to have a bit of echo combined with some hallway running to be annoying. In the morn. free coffee on the front porch is one memory i will cherish, had the whole front porch to myself a few times during the 4 th of july rush .Hope this helps, we will be back,

Room Tip: cat. 1 rooms are so much cheaper, and the front porch so awsome i feel they are the way to go.

Our party of four took advantage of the recent Mother's Day two day package, plus added one extra day. Everything from the room to the evening cocktail receptions to the champagne Mother's Day brunch were superb. All evening meals were delicious and beautifully presented. The breakfast menu and buffet were also excellent--the fresh fruit was exceptional. Our category 2 room was spacious enough for 4 adults--there was no view but that did not matter as we spent most of our time out and about the gorgeous historic hotel and grounds. All staff we came in contact with were friendly and professional. We plan to make a trip to the Grand Hotel an annual event based on our wonderful experience.

Just did two nights here with the family. Amazing time for everyone! The hotel is stunning from the first moment you see it on the harbor to the minute you leave. Mackinac Island is like going back in time since modes of transportation are horse and carriage, biking and walking all of which we did and enjoyed. My husband and I did the five course dinners at night while our sons enjoyed the dinner camps with wonderful staff and activities. Attire after 6pm is coat and tie and strictly enforced making this again a special experience. Women and children were decked out as well. Food was delicious, with great wine, drink of the day and sweets options. They have a very nice but unpretentious pool set near the woods and offer croquet on the lawn till 6pm. Outstanding service across the property. Amazing attention to detail and pampering guests. Rooms spacious and very "Grandesque". Will go back again and again!

It has been many years since staying at the Grand and the last time I stays was before I had children. I was not sure what to expect as far as activities for the kids; however, I was pleasantly surprised. The pool had tons of toys for all ages including a huge 'dragon' that could hold a dozen people, while those in the pool would try to know them off. There were plenty of other craft activities and games to play and they even offered babysitting.

As expected the service was top notch and very accommodating for the children. The food was excellent. What more can I say? It was Grand!

It had been a dream of mine to see Mackinac Island and stay at The Grand. My dream came true and it was delightful. Kudos to the Musser family. My only regret is that I didn't stay a third night to hear the concierge tell the history, as it is quite interesting. My room, although on the interior without a view, was charming. There was a power outage the first night due to mainland maintenance (I was in the elevator at the time; yes, there are back-up generators) and it rained all day the next. Had it been anywhere else it could have spoiled the trip, but this dry land cruise didn't disappoint.

Wait staff are imports, many from Jamaica, who add to the elan. Their name tags include the number of years they have been with the hotel.
