This is the second year I've stayed at Sunset Condominiums for the Detroit Regional Chamber's Mackinac Policy Conference. The garden rooms are reasonably priced for the island at about $160, and are spacious and clean, with a good firm bed, microwave and fridge. The view of Lake Huron is fantastic. Downtown Mackinac Island is a 20-minute, $7 horse-drawn taxi ride away. (Which is actually kind of nice, given how crazy the downtown can get.) The quiet at night is phneomenal, as is the stargazing on a clear night.
The only downside is that you're going to be able to hear what your neighbors are up to -- the walls are pretty thin. Oh, you're going to be able to tell what they had for dinner as well -- the small hotel style rooms are designed to be added onto larger condos to create 2- and 3- (and for all I know 4-) bedroom units, so they have doors in them to pass through to the unit next door. And those doors are very permeable to odors -- the night I checked in, my room had in it the overpowering odor of fried chicken.More
