“Absolutely Loved the Metivier Inn”
Reviewed May 26, 2008

We had an absolutely fabulous time. We booked the Metivier for our honeymoon. They upgraded us to the Jacuzzi room which was fantastic after a day of biking around the island. The staff were delightful to deal with. Waking to the smell of coffee and breakfast was awesome. We adored being able to drink our bottle of wine on their quaint porch with the other "tenants" and get to know each other. I would highly recommend this B&B to others.

  • Liked — The atmosphere was quaint and hospitable.

I really enjoyed Metivier for my second trip to Mackinac and felt it was worth the price. It is a charming and clean B&B; one of its most attractive features is its location on Market St, 1 block behind Main St. This makes it conveniently located, but also less noisy and crowded than if you stayed at one of the properties right on Main St. The rooms are very comfortable and attractively decorated. The bathrooms were small, but had modern and new toilets and shower/tubs. The sink was outside the room in my room and the room across from us.The shower head was a little low in our bathroom which was a little awkward for my husband. Beds were on the firm side, but comfortable. Walls are a little thin--I could hear doors being open and shut on my floor, but it didn't bother me too much.

Breakfast was serve yourself, but featured hot eggs, oatmeal, breads/pastries, fruit on both days I stayed. We also had sausage on one morning and enjoyed the lemonade and brownies during the afternoon. One nice touch is the long list of boardgames they keep in stock for guests, as well as the great front porch. Service was friendly throughout our stay.

  • Liked — Location and comfort
  • Disliked — Thinner walls, small bathroom

We just returned from our first visit to the Metivier Inn. We have not been to a lot of B&Bs (less than 20) but the breakfasts were outstanding. Granola, oatmeal with fruit, something sweet like coffee cake or fruit tart, scrambled eggs, fresh fruit, and probably more that I am forgetting. They serve good, homemade food that will fuel you through your morning of walking, biking, hiking, or anything else you do.

The Inn is very attractively decorated, with plenty of seating on the front porch. There's additional seating on the side porch and in the back yard. It's convenient to the main street and the ferry docks as well.

My only complaint has more to do with the house than the way the Inn operates--its walls are very thin, to the point where you hear your neighbor's clock radio and almost every word they say. This can be remedied by turning the fan of the window air conditioner on--it worked well as a noise diffuser.

Otherwise, it was a lovely visit and we're eager to return.

We booked our room directly with Priscilla several months before our stay. The rate per night was $235 plus tax and fee= $263. She was wonderful to talk to on the phone. We paid in advance of our stay, that is the policy.

We took the ferry to the Island on a Saturday morning and that is a wonderful experience in itself! Our luggage was tagged so that it arrived in our room without our being present, we were free to explore the Island!

Priscilla welcomed us when we arrived. She pointed out where breakfast is served, tea and coffee are available all day and in the afternoon she has pink lemonade, ice water and snacks. The napkins, plates, glasses and silverware are all out so help yourself.

We knew we would love this bed and breakfast the moment we approached it on Market Street! (The Inn is well-marked and the street isn't very long so even if you don't know where you are going you will find it with ease!) The flowers were all blooming and there is an arch you walk under as you enter the walkway to the Inn steps. A little stone bunny and birdhouses attached to shepherds hooks all make it feel like you are in a dream or a story book. It feels just the way "summer afternoon" sounds. We took lots of pictures! The balcany has white wicker chairs and rockers and even a small set for my children to sit on! The fabric on the chairs and couch are buttery yellow, sage green and warm coral with a lime green cloth for the table. Plenty of magazines and newspapers are available on the coffee table or lamp tables. We could not resist the invitation to eat our breakfast on the veranda!! Inhaling the pure morning air and hearing the waves and clip-clop of the horses made us feel we were transported in time!

The owners, Priscilla and Paul, have nine rooms in their bed and breakfast, mostly just double beds since mostly couples come to visit. Since we brought our two children we used the only room that accomodates four. It is about 15 feet by 12 feet and had two twin beds with a nightstand and lamp between them. Facing these beds is a double bed with the closet on one side and nightstand and lamp on the other. The ceiling fan above also has a light. The wallpaper is striped, the main colors are a sage green with cream. I loved that the bedspread is white because that feels clean to me. The room also has an antique-looking mirror and chest for putting on makeup. We loved the room and fresh air coming in the windows even though our view was not of the lake or anything special. The air conditioning works very well, we even had to turn it down when we arrived!

The bathroom is small by American standards. We have stayed in bed and breakfasts all over England and know with older buildings this is what is normal, but someone used to staying in a hotel may think it is too small. It has a newer tub/shower, floral border that I think is very pretty and classy and Victorian lighting. Clean towels for two are in the bathroom. Each of our children had a clean folded towel, hand towel and washcloth on their bed.

We enjoyed the breakfast very much. We had eggs with onions and seasonings added, sausage, fresh fruit, oatmeal, a variety of cereals and breads. All were delicious!!

We loved our stay! We hope we can come back again!

One idea that I will use for my house guests is they have an album with all the menus of local restaurants inside so you can get an idea of where you would like to go even if you don't know the area well! (Hint: Try Seabiscuit!!)

We felt like we were staying with friends at the Metivier Inn and felt very safe on the Island. We mostly go to Detroit, Indy and Chicago for vacations and this is really the only spot I would feel safe wandering around at night with my children. The other people on the Island are so friendly and kind.

  • Liked — Victorian feel, we were their guest, not #2505, location!!
  • Disliked — Just like in a home, you can hear other guests, no big deal.

Our stay was incredible! Clean, quiet, comfortable, beautiful inside and out; incredible attention to detail everywhere. We booked one night in a Garden view Queen and the next night their most popular "Turet Room" which overlooked Market Street. From there we could watch carriages riding by and hear the clip clop of horses during the day, and then have a peaceful quiet at night as the inn is one street off the main downtown street. Remote controlled ceiling fan/lighting and A/C was convenient. There's nothing like breakfast on a porch like that with the sun peeking through the trees and a cool morning breeze - IT WAS PERFECT! Breakfast was delicious: Hot eggs, sausage, home baked cinnamon bundt cake and cream cheese pastry, Amish granola, hot oatmeal with cherries, cold cereals, english muffins, homemade breads, yogurt, coffee, Metivier Inn Teas, Juice; we never left hungry! We'd stay here again without hesitation.

We stayed at the Mativier Inn, B&B on Market/Hoban - beautiful place, great location, good breakfast, and very much 'like home' feeling! We had a family reunion, 10 adults-9 children under the age of 8 - all stayed at the B&B!! We purchased kites at the Great Turtle Toys on Main St. and had kite flying contest at Windemer Point next to Iroqiuos Hotel. Best prices for bike rental is the "Bike Shop" on Hoban, next to Goodfellows.

I'd been to Mackinac Island several times before I stayed at the Metivier and was always impressed by the gardens in front of the Metivier. Finally, of course, I did stay there. The rooms aren't quite as nice as the gardens, but they are clean, cute, and bright. They are definately too small to fit a family in, or maybe even a bigger sized person though. The only chairs in the room are little wicker ones. They're cute, but not really functional. I think all the rooms at this hotel are unique though, so maybe others are different. There's no TV in the room, but there is a TV room downstairs. I went down there and watched the Olympics with several other guests one night. It was like staying at a hotel in the 1800's. You actually got to meet other guests. The rooms do have their own, good sized, clean bathrooms and AC. The breakfast was good, but the food was fancy (like scrambled eggs with spinach and onions) and kids probably wouldn't like it. I do think they had some cereal though.
