We'd never been to Mackinac Island, but my husband heard of it somewhere, so our first task was to choose lodging. Mackinac boasts an authentic Victorian atmosphere: horses drawn carriages instead of motorized vehicles, beautiful gardens, period architecture, a number of taverns or bars with atmosphere, and lots of restaurants and places to stay. At peak of the season some of the accommodations can be quite pricey. We noticed Cloghaun B&B initially because they had a special spring price, but also the house is about 2 blocks from the ferry docks.

The Cloghaun experience is much more than that, however. The house is 125 years old and filled with antiques and memorabilia from the original family that still owns it. We had chosen one of the two rooms that front the upstairs and have a balcony overlooking the town and the water. It was so peaceful. After wandering through the streets shopping and taking our carriage tour, we were ready to sit and breathe. It was chilly even in late May, but the balcony was sunny and warm enough. 

Breakfast was also relaxed but quite nice. I was curious about the history and the (still sleeping) gardens, but all my questions were answered. Cloghaun is a house of peace, a quite respite that I hope to visit again.

Really disappointing. A Beautiful old house with a lot of character, but not what we expect from a B&B. The room was OK, but no TV in room. not that we're TV addicts, but its nice to check the news and weather. NO A/C in room, which could be a n issue for summer stays. Close to Market street and Sheppler's Ferry are positives. Staff was not very friendly. Breakfast was way below par for a B&B--only cooked item was an egg/cheese casserole, which was not even hot. Had a cold non-impressive coffee cake, a bowl of melon and pineapple and an array of items to put in toaster. We're accustomed to more quaint B&Bs with gourmet breakfasts. The afternoon tea was nice and pastries were pretty good.

We stayed here in August for two nights. The house was very nice and clean, food was very good too. The location was perfect...close to pier, food, shops and activities, but most of the B&B's are in same area. Our room was very small, barely enough room for two people and we had to share a bath but we knew that when we booked room last minute. I only had two issues with staying here:
1. No air conditioning in house, so summer months is HOT. With only a very small window fan, I was very uncomfortable while sleeping, maybe a oscillating fan could be offered and would have been a welcomed comfort. Because the rooms are closed and locked during day the room just heats up with no cross ventilation.
2. Our bags were delivered to the house by Starline, but upon check-in Paul did absolutely NOTHING to help us girls manage our bags up the big flight of stairs. Basically watched us struggle to carry everything up, not even a hand with smaller/lighter shoulder bags. I just thought that was rude for a man to not offer to help a girl out.
Would I go back? Maybe...but I would check out other places first.
