As a frequent fudgey, I've been eyeballing the Cloghaun for quite some time. Over the winter I resolved that this had to be my first island place to stay for 2016. I'm so glad I picked an early-season trip there; I just didn't know I was in for frequent surprises. This was a solo trip, so I wanted to do Mackinac Island on the cheap and simple. I booked one of the rooms with a shared bath. I took the morning's earliest ferry and stopped right in, just in case my room was all set to go at 8:00 a.m. I was greeted warmly and immediately by Jim and Marti, who invited me to sit for coffee in the breakfast room while they checked my room's status. As I was chatting with other guests, Marti walked up with a set of keys and said she'd upgraded me to a room with its own bath, and that it was ready for me to move in. To a person, this was the kind of people-pleasing philosophy exhibited by the whole staff, and I'm sure you'll agree once you give Cloghaun a stay! The room she gave me was named the Anita, and I just loved it. Bed and entire room as comfortable as could be, nicely decorated, plenty of room. Two windows with a nice view of the grounds, Market Street and nearby Metivier B and B, roomy bathroom, shared access to a small refrigerator in the hallway, and of course access to charming, cozy living room, library, breakfast room. Oh, and only one TV in the place, which is in the common living room. I love that - I come to Mackinac to "let go," not to watch TV. Thanks Cloghaun!
My brother came from Traverse City to visit me and hike the island's many trails. After we completed a 3 hour hike and had lunch, I went to open my room to see a note on the door explaining that the B and B's only other reservation for the night could not make their ferry, leaving me as the only guest that night! This made me feel extra special: Marti and the staff offered to take me out to breakfast the next morning instead of cooking. I did not want them going through all the cooking for just one guest, and besides, how many chances like this are going to come along? I love those quirky Mackinac occurrences and don't pass them up. I was excited to have the big old place all to myself, but please don't take that as typical of Cloghaun! Cloghaun fills up because it is an island GEM. This was a FLUKE. It was not only a Sunday night, it was early early in the season, and the weather was cold (even for May Mackinac standards); it actually snowed during our hike that afternoon before yielding to more reasonable weather.
As for my night's sleep? What a hoot! I wondered why I kept waking from such deep comfortable sleep. The bathrooms are all equipped with plug-in nightlights (they think of all the little nice things here), and I realized after being stirred awake again that mine was repeatedly going on and off. I marched in there, clicked it off and jumped back into bed, vowing to check the bulb in the morning, but also thinking that in an old home with rooms named for the original inhabitants (Donneley Family), that there could be a little extra fun going on. I brought it up at breakfast with Marti and the staff and the consensus was that the "girls" were being their usual playful selves. Oh, in the morning I did inspect the nightlight's bulb and it was in perfect shape, so ya got me girls! Even without all the super hospitality and upgrades I would've become a repeat customer to Cloghaun! I'll stay again and again for sure. Worth it!
