“Loved our visit to Bay View”

We spent one night at the Bay View Inn and had a wonderful time the staff was very kind and we loved Rosie the cook - the food was delicious from the cookies (hot from the oven) to the great breakfast. We would definitely come again.

My husband and I try to go to Mackinac Island twice a year - once in the summer and again at the end of the season, in October. We always stay at the Bay View. The Bay View is not like most hotels that are the same in every city in the world. The Bay View conveys the character of the Island, itself - unique, relaxed, well-cared for, romantic.
The fabrics and furniture in the bedrooms are lovely. The beds are comfortable. The rooms are the perfect size for snuggling in after a day of activity. The large dining room is a pretty place to eat wonderful food, chat with interesting guests and the staff, and linger over a great cup of coffee.
One of our favorite things - reading on the front porch in the wicker chairs, watching the people and the horses ease on by and listening to the bells ring at St. Anne's.
I can't wait to get back to the Bay View.

We spent 3 nights at the Bay View in a standard room. It was elegantly decorated although very small. The bed was comfortable and since we didn't spend much time in the room we didn't mind. Would probably prefer a slightly larger room the next time, however. Rose and her staff were probably the highlight of our visit. The food was outstanding each morning and evening. Considered it a treat to be able to stay in this elegant old home.

Our first-time visit to Mackinac Island was made even more special by the wonderful time we had at the Bay View. The cheery yellow b&b, built in 1891, is conveniently located on Huron Street, making for an easy walk to downtown. Relaxing on the front porch was entertaining because of all the people strolling or bicycling by, and the horse-drawn carriages and taxis made their own unforgettable clop-clop music. Although our standard room was small, it was beautifully decorated with florals and plaids, and we enjoyed being able to see a bit of the lake, plus the steeple of St. Anne's Church, from our window. The third floor deck provided ample opportunities for taking pictures of the harbor and the fort and was a nice place to sit in the mornings and evenings. Without a doubt, the highlight of our Bay View experience was the food. The breakfasts--omelets, quiche, biscuits, fruit, pastries--were very filling and delicious. Freshly-baked cookies every afternoon and yummy desserts at night were served in the lovely dining room which offered great views of the marina and the ferries coming and going. Kudos to the kitchen staff who worked long hours yet remained friendly and pleasant; the housekeeping ladies were very nice, too. We plan to visit Mackinac Island again and will enjoy returning to the Bay View. However, we will take the Arnold Ferry instead of Shepler's because it's closer; also, we didn't appreciate one of the Shepler's employees smart aleck tone when he said "Enjoy your walk" when we told him we'd take our bags ourselves to the Bay View. He and a clerk in a store who literally put her open palm under my nose as I was getting out my money to pay for a sweatshirt were the only negatives to our Mackinac stay, and their rudeness certainly won't ruin the heavenly time we had. We will focus on the beautiful Victorian cottages/mansions, the bicycle ride around the island, the colorful flowers, the Adirondack chairs, the informative and friendly guides on the carriage tour, the views from the West Bluff, walking on the boardwalk at sunset, and the personable lady at the Island Breeze where we bought a print of the Grand Hotel.

As suggested by another one of the reviewers regarding this B and B, the rooms are very small. We had inquired several times about the size of the room, but were assured that the room was spacious and worth the >$250 that we would spend each night for the room. Upon arriving with 2 suitcases,we were unable to open our door to the room because of a chair just inside the room. I was able to walk from one side of the room to the other in less than 7 steps. When my husband used the sink, which was right beside the bed, I was unable to walk around him without his moving.
The staff that served us meals and dessert were delightful, but when casually asked about their workday, they revealed that they worked 13 hour days and 6 hour weeks. That seems almost illegal.
The manager was polite but rather unapproachable with her crisp answers, and she didn't hesitate to discuss all of the rules that we would be expected to follow in our rooms.
We also were disappointed to have to ask for soap and shampoo from day to day. In view of the cost of the room, those items should have been readily available, and we shouldn't have felt embarrassed (as we did) to ask for them.
Please search for a B and B with more spacious rooms, or don't hesitate to spend a little extra to get accomodations at the Grand Hotel. We travel extensively, don't mind dropping extra money, and usually enjoy our weekends away. We were unhappy about our stay.

My wife and I stayed in room 302 at the Bayview Inn for three nights beginning on July 4, 2005. Prior to booking the room, I made several inquiries with the hotel staff regarding the hotel and the room(s) that were available during this period of time. During the conversations with the hotel employees, I was assured that the room available (room 302) was a normal room with an air conditioner in the room.

Upon checking into the room, it was obvious that room 302 was not the normal room as advertised by the hotel staff. First, the door to the bathroom could not be fully opened because the bed was situated within two feet of the bathroom door. Additionally, the already cramped room contained an extra bed that had to be used as the storage site for our luggage since there was no other space to store the luggage. Finally, the space between the bed and the window was occupied by a portable air conditioner. Opening the windows to the room was not an option because this room did not face the lake breeze, and screens for the window were not provided until the last night. Not only was the air conditioner noisy, in order to keep the unit operating, I was required to remove and empty the drip pan on 3-4 occasions every night. Not surprisingly, neither my wife or I received a full night's sleep during the entire stay.

Of course, we did attempt to complain to the manager after the first night. However, the hotel employee told us that the hotel manager was not onsight and that if we had a complaint we could mail it to the manager. Moving to another hotel at this point was not an option because of the lack of vacant rooms on the island. In summary, we were disappointed in the accommodations provided, and we were even more disappointed in the lack of response regarding our complaints.

What a wonderful first-time experience on the island! The Bay View was terrific. Upon arrival, there is hot, fresh chocolate chip cookies and lemonade or coffee. The room we had was small, but beautifully furnished and very romantic. We had a "bay" view window and we could watch the street and the fort. We could hear the "clip clop" of the horses passing by. The porch and deck were great places to watch people or the marina. The rooms were very private and quiet. Didn't know there were others in the building when we were in our room. The evening "snack" was fantastic... a big bowl of warm chocolate cake with whipped cream, ice cream and a cherry... (the night we stayed). VERY YUMMY. And breakfast was a BIG deal with several courses served to you in a cute dining room. Yes, it was a bit pricey, but well worth it. GREAT location, just at the edge of the downtown... close enough to walk to every where, but far enough away for a little peace and quiet!!!!
