Recommended length of visit: 2-3 hours
Owner description: It's a different time inside the stately stone walls of Fort Mackinac. The cannon blasts, the rifles fire, the soldiers march and history comes alive. The oldest building in Michigan and 13 other historical structures boast exhibits explaining everything from military training and battles to medical treatments to family life within the fort. More than just a military outpost, Fort Mackinac served as a home for soldiers and their families and eventually the headquarters for Mackinac National Park, where tourists to the island visited the great fortress on the bluff, much like they do today. This is Mackinac.

Spend two hours minimum...maybe more if you happen upon the dance or court re-enactment...try marching or danceing with your love or kids..certainly catch the Cannon firing ...have kids dress in wool uniforms in the middle of summer..they love it..coffee on the LARGE balcony overlooking the most beautiful park with Statue of father Marquette looking lakeward...look up your last name in the History computer..this is a State of the Art Island and I have watched improve for thirty years..I love this place

this was our first visit to the fort. we learned a bit about local history and the 1812 war. Watched a canon and flint rifle fire. There were some good displays showing how the soldiers lived in the early 1800's. I would have liked more interpretive descriptions of the life by live actors. All in all, well worth the admission.

The fort was full of historical information. The cannon was shot several times and they also gave a musket demonstration.

Some interesting history here and worth a look. It was cool to watch them recreate some events and fire the cannons. You can see the buildings as they originally were.
