Since we were there on a sponsored outing, we were able to explore the fort without paying an entry fee. It was an interesting place to visit.

The fort has several buildings dating back to the early 1800s that are open for viewing. Interpretive signs and audio visual presentations are captivating. There's always activity on the parade ground: flintlock demos, mock trials, music, etc. Ticket price includes access to five other historic buildings.

Went to Fort Mackinac with my husband and another couple friend (no kids). It was a fun experience and very educational, interesting history (took us about 3 hours to go through everything (good pace, not racing through)). The activities on the lawn were fun to watch and participate in (for any age) and seemingly was a great place to take kids (kid friendly buildings and events). The views were quite impressive, probably the best on the island.

Pretty steep uphill climb to get to the entrance, but all ages were climbing (so don't let the height scare you away). The cost was only $11 per person and also allowed you admittance into other sites on the Island (historic home, blacksmith, etc.).

Try and picnic on the lawn in front of the Fort - great place to relax and watch people go by (a grocery store is right there on the corner and has some convenient options for snacks/lunch).

Being a fat man, it was a deplorable decision I made to ascend the steep ramp to Fort Mackinac on a sweltering July afternoon. After I huffed and puffed to the top without stopping I was rewarded with an amazing view of downtown, the bridge and Lake Huron. I had no idea there would be re-enactors from different time periods and all of their presentations were fun and informative.

All the buildings at the fort have signage dictating what they were used for (Post HQ, Medical bldg, etc...) I walked the walkway around the perimeter and took some pretty amazing panoramic photos. All employees/actors were friendly and welcoming, with excellent information. The one drawback is that with period buildings there is no air conditioning; however with the fort being on the top of a hill, the breeze was pretty amazing, especially in the shade. At the foot of the hill the breeze is non-existent. This is a great place to visit if you're a history buff, and your kids should be pretty enthralled with it too. I suggest taking at least a couple of hours and seeing the canon and musket drill presentations.
