Owner description: It's a different time inside the stately stone walls of Fort Mackinac. The cannon blasts, the rifles fire, the soldiers march and history comes alive. The oldest building in Michigan and 13 other historical structures boast exhibits explaining everything from military training and battles to medical treatments to family life within the fort. More than just a military outpost, Fort Mackinac served as a home for soldiers and their families and eventually the headquarters for Mackinac National Park, where tourists to the island visited the great fortress on the bluff, much like they do today. This is Mackinac.

We took the tour of Fort Mackinaw with low expectations but to our pleasant surprise my family and I loved it. You can back out of any portion of the tour. Although we attended a couple hours worth.
All areas were amazing reinactments of the war of 1812 with exact information of that period. The employees were amazing and seemed to enjoy their jobs.
Explore the rest of the island after leaving the fort, it's worth it.

We reached the fort via the carriage. It stopped there and we decided to get off rather than walk up the hill. There is a charge of $11 per person.

The fort is 150 feet above the Straits of Mackinac and overlooks Marquette Park. There is a lot to look at here from beautiful views to a old buildings that show what life was like at the fort in the 1880's. There are soldiers walking around who will answer questions for you. We observed the soldiers marching too.

After walking around I recommend that you go to the Tea Room and sit out on the terrace. The best view on the island is right there and you can sit in the breeze and sip your favorite beverage or get a bite to eat.

First off, if you have trouble walking, choose another attraction. To get to the gate, you have to hike up a very long and fairly steep hill. We're all relatively young and in shape, and we were winded at the top. Lots of stairs inside too (saw an older couple struggling mightily).

Once you're in, plenty to see and do. You can wander the place on your own, but there were two tour options - one to see a soldier's life and another to see what families experienced. Both are about 30 minutes.

There are a few people dressed in period clothing, but they don't act "in character". Fine with us, but don't expect re-enactors. Informative though. Also don't expect any battle stories - this fort didn't see any.

Buildings are well-kept and the views are nothing short of spectacular. Be sure to catch the cannon demonstration. Definitely worth the time, money and hike-induced post-visit oxygen tank.

We almost didn't do this because of the cost but glad we did. There is a lot to see. Most of the buildings are very interesting to look through. The views are amazing. There are clean restrooms plus there is a restaurant there you can try although we did not but it looked nice.

The fort is an informative and extremely interesting well done exhibition. The demonstrations and knowledgable personnel were a fine addition and help in understanding the historical significance of the fort and the role it played in our history.
