Recommended length of visit: 2-3 hours
Owner description: The cannon blasts, the rifles fire, the soldiers march and history comes alive. The oldest building in Michigan and 13 other historical structures boast exhibits explaining everything from military training and battles to medical treatments to family life within the fort. More than just a military outpost, Fort Mackinac served as a home for soldiers and their families and eventually the headquarters for Mackinac National Park, where tourists to the island visited the great fortress on the bluff, much like they do today.

Great history, amazing views. Loved learning about the history. My husband liked the artifacts. They have kid activities to keep them engaged as well. Steep climb up but worth it for the views. Take your time and enjoy your visit.

Fort Mackinac is very large and there is a lot to see, so give yourself an hour or two for everything. It was very interesting seeing the historic buildings and how life at the fort was like way back when. The shooting demos were neat but we stayed up on the hill to watch them. The best part was the great views of the harbor.

People in period costumes did musical and musket firing demonstrations. The buildings are staged as an example of life would have been like for the fort residents. The views from the hill are fabulous.

Lots of walking, climbing stairs, but very historic and interesting. great views for taking photos. Leave enough time to tour the fort and get a carriage tour back to main street.

This Island is great. I love it. It is beautiful, fun entertaining and something to do for everyone. The fort is just pure American history. The restaurant at the fort has a nice patio over looking the harbor. It is awesome. If you are young and want to party, downtown is fun and just wait until after hours when the locals party. It really kicks off. If you want pure tourism it is there. You can't beat the romantic spots all around the island. If you are an eco tourist, can you beat the fact that there are NO CARS on the island. The gold courses are worth checking out too.
