Gary and Sue Ann are wonderful! They make you feel right at home, yet have a way of pampering you at the same time. The house is amazing. We also loved Ludignton.
We had a great get away weekend.

I recently stayed at the Cartier Mansion for a business trip and the experience could not have been improved upon. The house is in its original immaculate condition and Gary and Sue Ann are exceptionally gracious hosts. From the beautiful interior woodwork to the Pete's coffee in french press pots, the experience was first rate throughout. I strongly recommend staying at the Cartier Mansion.

This place is excellent. We have stayed in B&B's all over the country and this place is the nicest I have ever seen, much less stayed in. The current proprietors are only the third owners in the 100+ years of the mansion's existence. So, all of the fixtures, features and details are still in place, and they are all incredibly well-preserved. The woodwork alone makes this a museum-quality place.
Happily, the beautiful appointments do not make staying here, in any way, a stilted or uncomfortable experience. The owners, Gary and Sue Ann, really mean it when they say "make yourself at home." We were encouraged to use and experiece all rooms and furnishings, including the amazing reading room, off the library by the fireplace. Even though it was a beautful day outside, we couldn't resist taking a half an hour to relax in that room with a book - just soaking it all in. I cannot wait to go back in winter to read a book by the fire.
Good coffee, tea and snacks are available around the clock, and fresh coffee shows up upstairs by the guest rooms by 7:00 am, two hours before breakfast. So you can get a cup and then go back to bed in the almost ridiculously comfortable beds and sheets. And the breakfasts are not to be missed. If Sue ann ever decides to switch gears, she would be a great addition to the kitchen of any fine dining restaurant. We were there for three breakfasts and each one seemed somehow to be better than the last. One morning, we had to leave early and when we mentioned we would not be there for breakfast, Sue Ann, without us even requesting it, whipped up a delicious early breakfast for us. Also, the homemade strawberry shortcake that she made for all the guests to enjoy, gratis, while watching the Fourth of July parade from the porch, makes my mouth water as I write this.
The proprietors are extremely pleasant, helpful and accomodating, without ever being intrusive or overly solicitous. In addition to the food and fine appointments, they understand that schedules can get jumbled. We were running late and called ahead to let them know. They stayed up to let us in and even gave us a quick tour and suggested a place down the road where we could still get something to eat.
Also, the parking is spacious and very convenient - right out the front door off the driveway.
FIVE STARS.

Gary & Sue Ann were EXCELLENT hosts. Sue Ann gave us a tour and history of the house as soon as we arrived. They upgraded us to the suite because they had no other guests that night. (It was a Tuesday). We came over on the car ferry and it was very convenient to find. Lovely accommodations. Gary & Sue Ann sat down and shared breakfast with us and gave us traveling tips and great conversation.

We held our wedding at the Cartier Mansion. It was everything we had hoped for, and the owners went out of their way to help us with the arrangements. We toured every B & B in northern Michigan (it felt like) and the minute we walked in we knew it was the one. The mansion is so beautiful we didn't even have to decorate. We were able to let go of all the stress and enjoy each other and our families.

The Cartier Mansion is a beautiful home very near Lake Michigan. The proprieters of the hotel are warm and welcoming without ever being intrusive. We stayed in the "Servants Quarters" which was, in essence, a suite -- two bedrooms, one bath and a very small sitting room, all accessible by a private staircase (which is narrow and probably not good for very small children).

You could walk to Lake Michigan from the Mansion, but I would suggest driving. Ludington State Park is only a few minutes away and provides a beautiful Lake Michigan beach as well as a smaller lake. Take your tubes along -- you can float along an absolutely beautiful river right into Lake Michigan.

The only complaint I would have is the lack of good restaurants in Ludington -- if you're looking for cuisine, it's definately not the place. But if you're looking for a beautifully restored home and one of Michigan's most beautiful beaches (and that's saying something!), this is the place to stay.
