“Best park in Michigan”
Reviewed February 19, 2014

I've been to Ludington State Park almost every summer of my life. It is the nicest state park in Michigan. The beach is fantastic. If the big lake is too rough, you can go hang out at the Hamlin beach. There are very well kept up bike trails for riding. The river or lake Hamlin for fishing. The dam is always neat, although I haven't seen too many fish caught there (despite all the effort). The campgrounds themselves are very nice and well kept up. Bathrooms are clean. Campsites have electricity. The rangers can sometimes be a bit snobbish, but I think that's pretty typical. Also, the nature center collapsed awhile ago from snow and that still isn't repaired. Not sure what is up with that, but overall it is a super nice park. I look forward to going there every year.

I've lived in Michigan most all of my life and have been to a lot of State Parks, but never had been to Ludington, so decided to take a last summer camping trip there after Labor Day. This park has something for everyone - if you want to "hike in" to a campground or pull your big rig, this is the place for you. There are tons of hiking trails, including a skyline trail atop of a dune, where you can see for miles. They have a nice trail out to the historic lighthouse and even a canoe trail. You can rent kayaks, canoes, bikes and who knows whatever else. There's a great beach on Lake Michigan and Hamlin Lake, take your pick. Hunt, fish, hike, ski, nature walks, swimming and on and on. The bathhouse was open on Lake Michigan, but the concession stand was not - probably because it was after Labor Day. Deer roam around freely throughout the park and don't even seem scared of humans. Tons of places to ride your bike within or outside of the park. Watching the salmon fisher-people was fascinating and some guy had really good luck with Blue Gills in Hamlin lake the same day. The place is just huge and the beaches are clean. My only complaint was there wasn't quite enough hot water in the showers for my liking, and it didn't much matter what time of day or night I went. Didn't see many rangers patrolling around, but again it was later in the season and not a ton of people. It was very, very quiet when I was there. I can't wait to go back!

Room Tip: No rooms. Some sites are level and some are not.

This was our first time camping at Ludington. Had a nice time, stayed only one night, will plan more nights next year. The bike trails were a blast. We rode for hours. Watching the Kingfishers by the river was fascinating ! Back again next year for sure.

Great campsites nestled between two lakes; Lake Michigan and Hamlin Lake. Gorgeous beaches, a multitude of hiking trails and biking trails. Float down the river or fish at the damn. You can catch the sunrise on the boardwalk at Lost Lake and watch the sunset at the historic beach house on Lake Michigan. You won't find a more perfect family vacation stay.

My family & I have camped here 2 years in a row now. We just love this park. There are 3 separate campgrounds to choose from & we have always chosen the one closest to the Dunes & Lake Michigan. Both times we've gotten a campsite with the sand dunes directly behind it & have loved it! Our kids 10 & 8 love being able to walk to the hill behind our campsite then up to the sand dunes and play in the huge sand dunes that rest up against Lake Michigan - makes for a gorgeous sunset as well. Yes this campground has a LOT of sand but the area is known for the vast beach & sand dunes so its expected. The beach is accessible through the adjacent park or at basicallt any spot along the long road leading to the park. Great areas for fishing at Hamlin Lake located on the east side of the park. The park also had plenty of hiking trails (over 20 miles) as well as a trail that leads out to the lighthouse & a biking path all with beautiful views. Floating on tubes from Hamlin Lake to Lake MI is also big here. Restrooms were clean but tend to get a bit sandy in the showers. Park rangers were extremely good about cleaning the showers several times a day. The shower area does not have much ventalation so it get very difficult to get dressed in there as its very muggy. Overall this park is a great place to stay with something to keep you busy & active every day.

we started going to Ludington years back before it was so busy we ever had to call for a spot u just drove up so like I said years ago. now I find the park almost impossible to get into even starting 6 months in advance calling. so my husband and myself now that the kids are grown and gone chose to go in late sept. early oct. now this is the park I remember sometimes still busy on weekends but during the week so quiet and nice .THIS PARK IS WAY TO BUSY ANY MORE so if you want to enjoy it and can go late into season do it. the sunsets and trails are amazing. bath house needs up dating but ok. and since I get up before dawn taking a shower at 4am no problem with hot water. love the park but will not visit late june thru labor day to dam busy.
