“Cozy winter getaway”
Reviewed February 9, 2011

We really enjoyed our time together at this Inn. We stayed in the Maple cottage which was very clean and cozy. The best part to us was the kitchen that had stocked pots & pans, plates, etc.. We brought spices and such with us and were able to make gourmet dinners with local meats, bakery goods, wines, and dairy products. This inn is located in a prime spot south of Leland and north of Sleeping Bear Dunes. We were able to cross country ski on scenic snow covered drives for the mere price of a national park pass. Make sure to visit the grocery strore "Leland Mercantile" in Leland and the wineries in the area. The drive up M-22 is a turn-back the clock paradise of lake views, vineyards, orchards and small towns. The innkeepers are very helpful and gracious. Only recommendation would be to have curtains in the main areas of the cottage to help with privacy (all other units have curtains) and invest in more comfortable tops for the mattresses. All in all, this was a great stay and we will definately return.

We stayed here after reading a glowing review in the Chicago Tribune. While Whaleback is a nice place, at $200/night for our two bed room, it is a bit overpriced and has limitations we wish we'd known about. On the plus side: the room is comfortable, and updated. The chairs on the porch and the lawn are delightful for sitting and reading. The included continental breakfast is convenient; the fruit is fresh and sweet, the coffee is weak and the bread things are humdrum. Our room, like most at the Inn, faced both Leelanau Lake (lovely) and route M22 (not so lovely). Water access is across the road. The well water, which is what one drinks, is really awful-soapy, icky taste, and it smells (in the shower). Bottled water in the common room, for filling water bottles, would make a huge difference in the experience.

We have gone to the Whaleback for a few years now. Our experience has always been great. Scott and Tammie always make you feel welcome. The room is always clean and your needs are always met. The friendliness of the other travelers is always enjoyed with conversation and laughter. The breakfast is tasty and you can enjoy the front porch with others. Foster (their golden retriever) is available for doggy kisses when he is allowed outside! We look forward to the next year!

When we reserved a king-sized bed in a room at a place described as an "inn" overlooking Lake Leelenau, we had greater expectations than were met when we arrived. We also were surprised that our entire three night stay was charged in full to our credit card at the time of the reservation a full month ahead of our trip. The rates were pretty steep--$169 a night for a weeknight and $199 for the weekend rate, but as I said, with those prices and the web description, we were expecting something really special. Instead, we had a motel room in a strip of motel rooms on a bluff across the street from the lake with a forced air heater that kept us awake when it ran but froze us out when it was off. On Saturday and Sunday only, they put out some baked goods and juice in a room in another building and no coffeemakers in the motel rooms--so for any morning coffee, guests have to get dressed and go across the property for a cup. The innkeepers are really nice people, doing their best, but we really felt this place was terribly overpriced.

I had to write in response to the "never again' post. My husband and I have stayed at the Whaleback Inn numerous times over the last 8 years. We have had nothing but an immaculate room and friendly, but unobtrusive service. Another reviewer indicated that no one was around initially. This is a B & B where that is fairly common; typically these are families running B & Bs. Personally, we have never had difficulty finding someone to check in with. We typically stay in the Deluxe King which has a Jacuzzi, sky lights, and a very comfortable king bed. We love this place and plan to stay there again this fall. We feel so strongly about this B & B that we purchased a gift certificate for our friend's 50th birthday. The owners extended the expiration date without question; very customer service oriented.

Great Inn to stay at. We really enjoyed our stay at the Whaleback. The location was ideal and the room was very comfortable. The setting is beautiful and my children enjoyed the afternoon lemonade and swimming in the Lake. The breakfast was very tasty. Our beds were very comfortable!! I would stay again! Scott and Tammy were very helpful and friendly!

If your looking to get away from it all - this is the place to stay. Clean, comfortable, peaceful and away from the city. We have been staying at the Whaleback Inn for nearly 8 years. The inn keepers Scott and Tammy are very kind. The rooms are clean, the towels and sheets are crisp. Each room has a ceiling fan, door wall and a screen door to allow the beautiful breeze from the lake to cool your room. The hotel is about northern Michigan and it's quaintness - not about a large city hotel with rapid computer access and a big screen television. This truly is about getting away, having breakfast on a large front porch over looking Lake Leelanau and visiting with other guests. It's location is perfect for touring the wine country, kayaking the Pine River, climbing the Sleeping Bear dunes, mountain biking the Traverse City trails and returning to a great little hotel. My children love going to the Inglenook Room to make hot chocolate or to purchase a candy bar. Across the street is a fishing dock, paddle boat for guests to use and adirondack chairs to sit and plan your next day. Again, if you are looking to enjoy northern Michigan, peace and quiet this is the place to stay. If your looking for big screen televisions, noise and computer access to work - I would recommend staying in the big city.
