“A Family Friendly Restaurant”
Reviewed July 15, 2014

Every time we visit northern Michigan we stop for dinner at Bluebird. It's a traditional restaurant, family owned since the 20's. They are very welcoming to families. Good service, too. The food is tasty but not fancy. If you are looking for good fish or a steak, this is the place for you. The salad bar just adds to its charm.

“Great place to sit out the rain”
Reviewed June 21, 2014

We found this a great place to hide from the rain. Bloody Mary's are pretty good. The bar service was good as well..

“Best whitefish in the state”
Reviewed June 21, 2014

We have been coming here for thirty years, and it is still our favorite. They have consistently excellent service and food. The lightly pan fried "Blue bird style" whitefish is fantastic, and the pea salad is the best. I dream about this place all winter, and I cannot wait until summer comes for my whitefish fix. No one does whitefish any better. It is simple but excellent.

“LOVE their salad bar!”
Reviewed June 7, 2014

We are local and typically eat in the bar vs. restaurant when visiting this restaurant. I love that you can order the salad bar or order off of the fancy menu from the bar side. The restaurant is split. Be warned that they pretty much nickel-dime ya for most everything on their menu--you want tomato, cheese, onion, etc with that sandwich or burger--they charge extra. If you order the shrimp, clam strip or chicken strip baskets--it is a basket of just that--fries are extra--this annoys me as when a place says "basket" it usually includes fries with it--like how much does that cost. Now to the positives--love their salad bar. It is $11 for that and it is basically the best salad fixins and homemade dressings--but the best part is their side salads--the potato salad, pasta salads and coleslaw are the best. I love this place for just the salad bar--and not too many places offer a salad bar any more. Their fine dining side is very good--have ate their many times and have really enjoyed their prime rib and perch both. I have heard their lamb is excellent too (I just don't care for lamb). Worth a visit for some good eats. Service was very good as well.

“Cool Place”
Reviewed May 2, 2014

Visiting The Bluebird is practically a right of passage on any visit to the Leelanau Peninsula. The restaurant's history alone is worth the visit. We recently stopped in for an off-season lunch. Nothing spectacular, and the restaurant portion of the place, which overlooks the river, wasn't open for the season yet, but it was still a good time. Had a couple of delicious, homemade Bloody Mary's from the bartender, followed by the fish tacos, which were just okay. My wife had the fish and chips, which were better than the fish tacos, but nothing to write home about. The Bluebird is all about history and atmosphere though. And the quality of the food definitely picks up in the summer. There has also been a little bit of a shortage of Whitefish this year because of the harsh winter. At any rate, I will still always stop at the Bluebird when staying on Leelanau (and will wait for a table for a considerable amount of time in the summer to eat here). So that should tell you something.
