“Something for everyone”

Great home cooked meals and homeade desserts served old fashion cafeteria style.

There is nowhere else in the area where you can get a good old fashion home-cooked meal in such a friendly atmosphere. The menu has a variety of selections to fit anyone's taste, diet or allergy. The Old Stove has take out and also does catering. What a wonderful addition Mary and Rosie are to downtown Lapeer.

“Best Place in Town!”
Reviewed February 12, 2013

This little restaurant has the feeling of walking into Grandma's kitchen. Friendly and warm service, great homemade comfort food and the feeling as if you are family every time you walk in the door. I love the ham and scalloped potatoes the most, but my 2 year old loves the sweet potatoe pie. This is a "Must stop in" place if you are in the Lapeer area.

“Just like mom use to make...”
Reviewed January 8, 2013

Nothing fancy here...just good honest food at an honest price. Every day, you are offered one pasta dish, one entry, one homemade soup to choose from. Salads, hot dogs, and hamburgers are available every day. Homemade cookies, homemade cakes, and pies are available for dessert. You will meet the cook and owner. There is plenty of parking available on the street or in the lot in the back. A wonderful addition to the downtown Lapeer. They are open for lunch and an early supper Monday through Friday. Closed on the weekend.

“Maybe you CAN go Home”
Reviewed September 10, 2012

You hear the saying "You can't go home again". That may be true in many ways, but at the Old Stove Cafe, you can re-live memories of old times and how the old fashioned cafe was like. I have memories from the late 1960s to through the 1970s of eating at places very similar to this cafe when I was a little kid. These places were in Kentucky, many in Southern Ky, near where my dad grew up.

This place has the cafeteria tray rail, just as true cafeterias do. You start by picking up your tray and silverware and select food items down the line and pay at the register at the end. The foodservice line at IKEA is similar in process, but the food here is genuine Americana.

I purchased a bowl of soup and a cold, egg salad sandwich (wrapped in Saran Wrap) from the cooler, and a soft drink. All were good and tasted just like home.

A lot of foodies will turn up their noses and scoff at the idea of food that has been sitting in a heating tray for a while, but for some items, I actually prefer the taste, as they bring back fond memories.

The decor of the restaurant brings back memories of old times (antique kitchen artifacts and old photos of families enjoying meals).

I like the chalk walls in the bathroom... restroom poets can add their two cents worth if they like (chalk provided).

Something new here, and definately not from the past, is the online auction display. There are items displayed in a cabinet and on shelves that are available for bid on a local online auction. The items are antiques and other decorative craft objects.

I highly recommend visiting this place for the nostalgia alone, the food itself is good, but not extraordinary.

The next time I stay overnight at the Shamrock Farm Bed and Breakfast, this will be my new lunch spot to compliment the down-home experience of yesteryear.
