Description: Mangia Pizza & Pasta Co. is yet another chapter in a family tradition in restaurants that began when Amo and Rose Scotese opened La Cantina in Paw Paw in 1936. Their grandson Emilio Dacoba and his wife Maria, currently part owners of La Cantina with other family members, opened their own restaurant, Mangia, Mangia, in 2008 in downtown Kalamazoo. The downtown restaurant features traditional Italian dining with many of the recipes passed down from Nonna Rosa, as Emilio calls his grandmother. Its name is the admonition of every Italian grandmother to family and friends at her dining table to "Eat, eat!" Emilio and Maria, however, thought the west side of Kalamazoo was prime for a casual, family restaurant. When the opportunity came in the fall of 2012 to purchase the Mi Ranchito restaurant building on 9th Street, Mangia Pizza & Pasta was born. The rustic, stucco interior of the former Mexican restaurant fell right in line with their plans to transform it into an Italian style cantina with a casual atmosphere. To go along with the casual atmosphere, MP&P has a beautiful outdoor patio off the bar. We offer casual Italian and American family-style dining in a comfortable setting, but with a taste and flair you wouldn't expect to find in your typical neighborhood restaurant. We said MP&P would be comfortable, not typical.

“Yum!”
Reviewed June 8, 2013

Have enjoyed the sister restaurant La Cantina in Paw Paw so decided to try Mangia. There were six of us and we were seated immediately. Waitress was courteous and recited all specials and answered questions about the entree options. Service was speedy and the entrees were wonderful! There was more food than we could eat and we all brought home doggy bags. We will definitely be back!

“Don't Even Bother”
Reviewed June 1, 2013

I don't even know where to begin. I don't like writing completely bad reviews, I try to find something positive. This one was difficult. Agreed to meet friends at this new restaurant. We arrived first so sat at the bar. The bartender was great, personable and engaging. The drinks were terribly overpriced and very small however. We had made reservations, but the other couple who joined has tried to make the reservations and were told they didn't accept reservations. Hummmm. We went to our table in the lounge as the dining room was loud, noisy and chaotic. Placed our order with an obviously new and possible in training server. The salads when they finally arrived looked appealing and fresh, but were loaded with an oily like dressing. We all ordered different entrees so we could sample. There was not one dish that had a great flavor. All of the pastas are served in a bowl, but of a size and shape intended for soup, not pasta. Each bowl was overloaded and impossible to navigate. I had the shrimp pasta and it was completely tasteless, and the shrimp was cooked beyond recognition. The pasta itself was so overcooked that it bore no resemblance to anything remotely like pasta. While there, many of the tables near us asked to see the manager to complain about their meals. Pizza was doughy, undercooked and lacked toppings. Similar to our table of 4, others complained about the oatmeal like consistency of the pasta. We were offered take home containers, but we all declined. This restaurant is managed by owners who operate a restaurant in Paw Paw and downtown Kalamazoo. People seem to like them, so the anticipation was high. Unfortunately, it failed. They need to re-do their menu and improve the food. We will not return.

“Loud Noise Level Cancelled the Good Stuff”
Reviewed May 29, 2013

You could not talk without shouting and repeating to friends. Hard ceilings and the room somehow just made everything noisy.

The food was excellent. A shrimp pasta was wonderful and I had a baked pasta that was delish.

On a Friday night there was a strolling accordionist which was fun, but you couldn't hear him either.

Servers were excellent.
