Description: Locally owned and operated, the Great Lakes Shipping Company opened its doors to Kalamazoo in June of 1974. Offering the area's first taste of slow-roasted prime rib, choice aged steaks and a unique salad bar, Great Lakes was an immediate and welcome success. That tradition has continued with the addition of fresh seafood, chicken, and pasta. The Great Lakes Shipping Company has evolved within a philosophy of providing creative preparations of high quality foods and professional service in a relaxed, comfortable environment. In our latest menu, we've combined regional favorites and updated classics. As always, our commitment to quality remains uncompromised. Our dining room serves dinner seven days a week beginning at five o'clock each day, while the tavern opens at four Monday through Friday. Sorry, we're not open for lunch. We spend all day making sure your dinner will be perfect. So whether you're celebrating a special occasion with a bottle of cabernet next to one of our dining room fireplaces, or its just a quick trip to the salad bar and a sandwich in the tavern after a show, you can always count on the Great Lakes Shipping Company, a Kalamazoo tradition for over forty years.

“Great salad bar & atmosphere”
Reviewed October 10, 2012

This restaurant is a fixure in Kalamazoo, close to Western Michigan University. I have always enjoyed eating here. The restaurant has a nautical decor, with cozy fireplaces and low ceilings. I hope they don't change the decor to try to be more contemporary. That would be a shame. Not all restaurants need to look like a sunset in Italy or a trendy and noisy warehouse.
The big draw for me here is the salad bar. It's very hard to find a good salad bar these days, and this one is excellent. If you remember good salad bars from the 70's and 80's, you will be right at home. The salad bar is also reasonably priced, and could be a meal in itself. The last two visits I also ordered the fish tacos, which were very good. In the past I have usually ordered the white fish, which I have always liked.
Prices have been creeping up, so we tend to only eat there on special occasions. However, we have recently committed to eating there once a month. I've realized that if you like a restaurant, esp. a locally owned one, you need to patronize it more than once or twice a year if you expect it to stay in business.

“Great Atmosphere”
Reviewed September 13, 2012

The food had no taste. We tried several seafood dishes and none of them had any taste. The place was not full. In fact there were only 3 tables occupied in the restaurant. The reason could not have been the crowd hence a quick service resulting in poor quality of taste. The fish dish I ate did not have ant taste infact there was no salt in the fish. I would not recommend anyone to this place for sea food.
