I love Chinese food and I grew up in a country where Chinese restaurants serving different authentic Chinese cuisines are common place. Needless to say, when I moved here in the Greater Kalamazoo area in Michigan, one of the places I searched for is a Chinese restaurant serving authentic Chinese cuisine. I found this at Hunan Gardens Restaurant, the one on West Main St. in Kalamazoo, MI. (I just want to make it clear that this is NOT a Chinese buffet restaurant.) They have the regular Chinese menu which also carries your typical American Chinese dishes and dishes here are very good. They also have a separate Szechuan menu which is really fantastic and very authentic. Dishes in this menu are mostly hot/spicy but you can ask the chef to vary the degree of spiciness to your liking. They do have several very good non-spicy dishes. I order mostly from this menu. They have a Szechuan chef who does these dishes, however, he is off every Wednesday so don't go there if you only want to order from their Scechuan menu. I suggest call beforehand and ask. They are also the only Chinese restaurant in the area that serve Cantonese roast meat like roast duck and chinese barbecue pork. They also serve different Chinese noodle soups. My favorite here is the Taiwanese-style beef brisket soup. Another bonus here is sometimes you could ask for any specials that is not in the menu. If the ingredients are available fresh they would recommend one or two to you. Over the years they had served me clams in black bean sauce, sauteed pea pod tops, kangkong belacan ( this is actually Malaysian), different types of chinese soups, etc. If you like sweet and sour sauce ask for the pork or shrimp with ASIAN sweet and sour sauce. This is totally different from the usual S&S sauce which is color red. The Asian type is golden brown in color and tastier. One thing they don't serve here is dim sum.
When it comes to service, i would rate it as very good. The staff are friendly and accomodating. There might be minor lapse in the quality of service when the place gets very busy but then again it's still a lot better compared to other restauants I've been to in the area.
The place is clean and neat and moderate in size. the chinese decor is subdued, not over the top. If you like to eat in a place with grand and opulent ambience then this place is not for you. The restrooms are clean and smells good.
Parking is not a problem. the place is located in a small strip mall with a big free parking lot. It is located in the shopping area of Kalamazoo, west of the downtown area and is very very accessible.
I have been to this restaurant countless times and whenever I crave for Chinese food this is the place where I always go.
