This is, it appears, one of the two nicest hotels in the area. It looks like the hotel caters to whatever visiting professors and parents MTU gets. We paid less than $100 per night and were very impressed with the size, cleanliness and newness of the room (the king bed, the bath, the linens, etc)--as well as the awesome view from the window (if you're staying there, splurge for a room with the view of the Portage--it's really lovely and worth it). The Restaurant on the seventh floor (Spica?) was all right--I liked my food and my travel companion did not like his; but the service there was irreproachable, the view was lovely, and the prices were very reasonable for a hotel place. The staff at the hotel was knowledgeable and helpful, gave good directions and excellent advice as far as places to eat. Would gladly stay there again!

I found this place on TripAdvisor during a seven-week road trip, and what a great place it is! We wanted a balcony to relax and sip wine, so we booked a whirlpool suite. The bed was a dream, with a "feather bed" added! We had another great surprise when we had dinner upstairs. I certainly never expected cuisine of this quality when I booked the hotel. The room was very clean and large, however, the bathroom was small. I would stay again in a heartbeat! It is an easy walk to all the nearby shops, etc.

When I called to make the reservation, I requested a non-smoking room on one of the upper floors on the river side with a mini-fridge. We got all that we asked for. That's why I highly recommend contacting the property directly.
We (my son, husband and I) arrived after an 11 hour drive and checked in - very friendly staff. We were given 3 breakfast vouchers which were good for a free breakfast - 2 eggs, sausage or bacon and hash browns or $4.00 off anything else on the menu (which the prices were very reasonable and the food was very good). Then after breakfast every day you would pick up more vouchers for the following day's breakfast. The restaurant is on the 7th floor with a great view of the river, the hills and old mining sites.
Our room was nice - 2 queen-sized beds, desk, table and chairs with a good-sized bathroom. There is also free wireless internet. We were on the 5th floor.
One thing that really impressed me is when I checked out, they told me that since I reserved the room, their rate for that room went from $108/night to $112/night. They charged us the rate that was originally quoted to me. That's good business!
There is a convenience store/gas station right next to the hotel and a fantastic restaurant/brewpub (The Library) just 3 blocks away. One of the boats that takes you to Isle Royale National Park was right outside our window. We did not take advantage of that but many people did.

We stayed here for 2 nights while visiting family in the area. We had a king/ exec. suite. Room was a good size, but not really a suite. We were upgraded to a room with a view (just by asking at check in) and were charged less for the room than quoted when making the reservation :)

Included with the room was breakfast for 2 in the hotel restaurant. Included was eggs, bacon/sausge, hashbrowns juice & coffee. It was a great bonus.

Pool area was (as other reviews state) was 'adequate' but cave like (no windows) & dimly lit. Pool seemed clean & jacuzzi HOT. We were the only ones there at the time, which was nice.

Hotel was very centrally located to downtown houghton,

Being from Houghton, I've stayed at almost every hotel in Houghton/Hancock when I go back to visit. The Franklin Sq. Inn was very nice. Friendly people. Nice breakfast. Nice view of the water. Walking distance from food/restaurants. The gas station with soda, milk, etc. was just outside the hotel's door! Nice pool. I would stay there again!

  • Liked — The view, breakfast and near a gas station.

We go to Upper Michigan every year to visit family and have stayed at various hotels in the Houghton/Calumet area. The Franklin Square is by far the closest thing to a bigger city hotel and is located on the River, with nice views. It has a great breakfast included in the rate, indoor pool (located on third floor, nice pool/whirlpool/sauna but a little "dingy" looking with no windows to outside), computer lounge, full service restaurant/bar, and even has wireless internet availble. (The smaller motels north of Houghton still have rotary phones).

We stayed in the suite that has a balcony. Since it was July, it was warm enough to sit out at night and watch the downtown activity. Obviously it was pricier than the other low service motels, but if you want all of the services you should expect to pay more. I recommend this hotel

We stayed at the Franklin Square Best Western again for two nights, the last time being 15 years ago. The location is convenient to the small downtown area and although the property could use some updating it was certainly adequate for our needs. The room was large with a king size bed, sofabed, refrigerator and microwave. We had a view of the Mt. Ripley ski area from our window which was pretty at night. There is an indoor pool (albeit quite outdated), a restaurant and bar on site which was is probably why the property is listed as a 3 star. The staff were polite & efficient and we would probably stay there again.
